Reinstalling Cortana

Question

Monday, November 14, 2016 7:11 PM

Hello All..........I have a question with respect to Windows 10 Version 1607 Build 14393.351.  It is installed on a VM running on VMware Workstation.

I have uninstalled Cortana using following method:

http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-uninstall-and-remove-cortana-in-windows-10/

After doing so, I realized the search is not working and it was part of Cortana.  Now, I want to install Cortana again so that I can get Cortana and Search back, but I am failing to do so.

What I have tried:

1.  Extract install.wim of Windows 10 Version 1607 to find Cortana files in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps so that I can place them on my C:\Program Files\WindowsApps, but I am unable to find any Cortana folders in that location, so this fails.

2.  Extract install.wim of Windows 10 Version 1607 to find Cortana CAB files so that I can install the CAB files that can put the required files in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps, but I am unable to find any CAB files for Cortana, so this fails as well.

What else can I do to reinstalling Cortana again?

Hello

Try to run the PowerShell command:

  • Press Windows + X keys on the keyboard, select Command prompt (admin).

  • Enter the below commands one by one and hit Enter key.

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted

  • It will open the PowerShell window.

  • Now enter the below command and hit Enter key.

  • $manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Cortana).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest

  • Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"}

Thanks for the reply.

It returns this.

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> $manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.Windows.Cortana).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ;
Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest
Add-AppxPackage : Cannot find path 'C:\AppxManifest.xml' because it does not exist.

The best solution is to do a Clean Install of your version of Windows 10.

Otherwise, please have a look at the following 2 methods.........

I have never tried the following methods. So, I cannot vouch for any of them.

1. From Microsoft Download center : Download Cortana
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=47715

2. Win 10 | Reinstall Cortana to resolve App search & Other Related issues

Hello,

You can try to run Start Menu troubleshooter as it will check if Cortana is installed correctly and will rectify if it is not.

If issue still persists, go ahead and Reinstall Windows 10 without affecting your files (Refresh Windows 10).

Just to be sure.........

Since you have already uninstalled Cortana and there is no reason to doubt what you said, ONLY Clean Install can get your Cortana back.

Any Repair Install, Refresh or whatever will not help.

Hi ,

I found that you used a third party script to uninstall Cortana. We are not sure about how did it uninstall Cortana. But it has indicated that it will break search and You will not be able to-reinstall it quickly without using the genuine install.wim file.

Caution: Uninstalling Cortana breaks the Windows 10 Start Menu and probably Search so don't use this if you use the native menu. You will not be able to get it working back easily. You will not be able to-reinstall it quickly without using the genuine install.wim file. For most users, this means that Cortana will be removed from Windows 10 permanently. Think twice before you will continue.

I suggest you create a new account to have a check, check Cortana if can be reinstall under your new account. If not, I am afraid that we do need perform a reinstall as the script vendor indicated.

Best regards

Thanks for the replies.

@david hk129:  What would I lose out on clean install that you suggest?

1.  The link you share is just a doc file.

2.  I have already tried that with no luck.

@Kapil.Arya:  I have already tried that without any luck.  It just shows that Cortana is not installed and that I should install it, but how so that is the question.

Secondly, with respect to your reinstall suggestion without affecting files, what would I lose out on?

Also, would 1607 version ISO work of any edition?  I had LTSB version installed, but after the upgrade, it changed to something else which brought it Cortana as well, before I did not had any?

@david hk129:  I am confused as to what you are suggesting.  Are you suggesting to forget about everything installed on the system with respect to my apps and just reinstall everything?

@Rick_Li:  Thanks for the reply.  If I create a new account to try and install cortana, what should those steps be?  Can you please share that?

Thanks in advance.

RE : @david hk129:  What would I lose out on clean install that you suggest?

Clean Install, as its name implies, is to start fresh. Keep absolutely nothing. No "baggage" carried-over.

The first link I gave you is a Microsoft released link to download Media Creation Tool, then  run the Tool to download your version of Windows 10 iso file which you will burn it to a bootable media such as DVD or USB.
You will then use the bootable media to perform a Clean Install.

RE : @david hk129:**  I am confused as to what you are suggesting.  Are you suggesting to forget about everything installed on the system with respect to my apps and just reinstall everything?**

Yes. Answer same as above.  Your registry hack has broken something, as you were forewarned. No point to mess around with other "possible" remedies. Bite the bullet and do a Clean Install.

Hi ,

Just create a new account, then logon with new account, check if the Cortana can be reinstalled automatically during logon process. If not, perform a reinstall should be the last step you try.

Best regards

Thanks - this fixed Cortana search box for me (the start button also responds immediately now, where it used to take a few moments)
