Excel Crashes When Change Cells Data and Updating A Formula

Question

Monday, April 29, 2019 11:10 PM

Issue:

I am trying to use a formula to calculate or capture cell data from another cell.
When updating the cell I am referencing, or using the Fill Handle to drag the formula down multiple cells, excel crashes.

Steps:

In A1 type "   Keypads"
In A2 type "  Notebook "
In A3 type " Lap Top   "
Copy A1:A3 to A4:A6

In B1 type "=trim(A1)"
Use the Fill Handle to drag the formula down to fill B2:B6

Excel stops responding and must be force quit after minutes of waiting. (I can provide a video after my account is verified)

I have now just successfully reproduced the crash by simply selecting 9 cells and pressing the "DEL" key, which didn't even have cell references.

I did not have this issue about a month ago when working on a college assignment. Uninstalling and reinstalling Office 365 did not resolve the issue, but merely has prevented me from re-activating Office with my student account (which is still valid).

The last time this issue was reported, I saw the recommendation of disabling "AutoComplete for Cell Values" and "Automatically Flash Fill". I have disabled this already and still experience crashing. After restarting excel, these options re-check themselves.

Hi,

What detail version number of Office did you use? Please go to File- Account and provide the information as shown in the following picture:

Please try to open Excel in safe mode:

Press Win + R, type " excel /safe" in the blank box, press Enter. If it works fine in safe mode, please check the add-ins in your excel and disable them.

As you said this problem only appear recently, did you install any updates recently?

Please provide detain information about your Office application, any updates I'm glad to help you.

Regards,

Emi Zhang

Hello,

Currently I am running Excel Version 1904 (Build 11601.20144 Click-to-Run).

I manually ran the updater and still experienced the issue, and I have just tested in safe mode and also experienced the issue.

Before experiencing this issue (and manually running the updater) I have not installed any updates, unless they were automatically installed by my system.

Additionally, I created a VM and used the same Office 365 installer I previously used to re-install Office on my system earlier today and did not experience these issue inside the VM.

Additional System Details:

AMD Ryzen 2600
16GB RAM
Windows 10 64-bit
Version 1809 Build 17763.437

No changes to the registry or strange modifications to software, operating system, or anything otherwise.

Hi Kinomora,

I'm using the same version number of Windows and Office as yours, Version 1904 (Build 11601.20144 Click-to-Run) is the latest version now.

I tested your problem and I didn't reproduce the same problem as yours. In my opinion this problem may related to the Office application, I suggest you try to use Office tool uninstall Office completely and then re-install Office, about Office tool please refer to this support article option 2:
