Dictation for Office Apps not appearing as option

Question

Tuesday, January 29, 2019 11:20 PM

I am an Office 365 ProPlus user on the semi-annual channel.  Currently, I am running Version 1808 (Build 10730.20264) and updated to this version and build last week.

When I did this, I fully expected to see the option for Dictation in  Word 365.  Unfortunately, there is no Dictation button, either in the Ribbon or as an option to add to the Ribbon.  I do have Intelligent Services turned on.  Also, I do have the Dictation button available for OneNote (since the last update).  It seems that Dictation should be available in this version/build for Word and other Office apps as well.

Anything I can do to get this? (Note:  our IT team has our PCs very well locked down, so I can't do the registry hack I've seen to get me on the Monthly Channel, nor do I want to do this).

Thanks!

Hi,

Did all Office applications cannot find Dictate option Home Tab?

I suggest you go to File- Options- Custom Ribbon- under All Commands- add Dictate menu to Ribbon manually:

Then make sure you have set up Microphone in Windows, please refer to this support article and check if the Microphone setting is enable in Windows.

Any updates please let me know and I'm glad to help you.

Regards,

Emi

Hi and thanks for replying!

I can't post images as my account here is not yet verified, but I can confirm that my All Commands menu does not have the menu item you highlighted, nor the 2 "Dictate" commands immediately above it. It goes straight from "Diagram Styles" to "Dictionary".

The issue I'm having is very similar to the issues reported in this thread:  https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/95b5a637-6c9f-4728-9615-a990c67b6475/dictation-not-showing-up?forum=Office2016setupdeploy

Thanks!

Hi,

I received your image, I have the same version as yours and I don't have this problem.

What version of Windows did you use? I tested in Windows 10.

I suggest you also check if the Recording feature is enable:

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I am on Windows 10 (Fall 2018 update).  I have checked the sound options and it is enabled.

As I noted, this issue seems to afflict many people, some of whom have posted here on TechNet.  Is there a way to elevate this issue?  It is very frustrating.

Thanks!

Did you ever get anywhere with this?  Same problem, Dictate shows up for people sometimes on some machines, all with valid licenses and new versions of Office that are supposed to have it.  Simply isn't there for a huge number of our users though and MS support just pretends they've never heard of this before.

I've literally seen it work on and not work on two identical machines freshly imaged.  I've seen it not work on a Dell laptop out of the box with the Dell OS image still on it.  It's been like this since it was first launched to Monthly channel last year.  Both Monthly and Semi-Annual installations show this behavior.

Got absolutely nowhere.  Always the same pattern from the techs on here:  pretend like they are interested and then when it's clear I'm not a "Is your PC turned on" type of user, they melt away into the vast pool of anonymity afforded them by this forum.

The interesting thing is: this feature is available to me on Word online.  Just not on the desktop version.  But given the difficulties in moving easily between the 2 versions, that's not much help.

It would be nice if they stopped pretending like this isn't a fairly significant problem.  But I'm not going to hold my breath on that.
