Group Policy Client Side Extension Folder Redirection unable to apply because changes must be processed before startup or logon

Question

Hello Experts,

Please see screenshot attached. We have a problem where students login to lab computers and their computer-based printer GPO has not added the printer. When I ran gpupdate /force it shows "Group Policy Client Side Extension Folder Redirection unable to apply because changes must be processed before startup or logon" error. The printer issue happens about once a week and it is causing our Computer-based Printer GPO's to fail to map the printer until the students reboot the affected lab computer. Is it possible to track down, or how do I go about identifying what settings/configuration must be processed which is blocking my printer GPO from applying? We dont use Folder Redirection or have any of those policies enabled as far as I am aware.

What is strange is that I was able to pull up our printer server and add the printer manually without rebooting so that printer/driver doesnt actually need the computer to reboot in order to install.

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

The message is expected. This behave is by design.  Folder Redirection and Software Installation Policies require the synchronous policy application. The gpupdate /force start an asynchronous policy refresh, the system sets a flag that indicates that the application of Folder Redirection or a software installation policy is required. The flag forces synchronous application of the policy at the user’s next logon.

If you would like to update Folder Redirection Policy, please just log off and logon. For more detailed information, please refer to  http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787939(WS.10).aspx

Please run gpresult /h result.html to get more detailed information for your issue.

Best regards,

Lee

Just do it.

Hi thank you for the reply. Sorry, I think maybe I described my problem poorly. For some reason, some students are not getting the printer mapped because there pending configuration/setting changes blocking the printer GPO from running. How do I identify what that is that is blocking it?
