Question

Hi ,
We would like to move to VS 2012 version when it is released. So I thought I woud try the RC version. But our development machines are still Windows XP. But as per this URL http://www.unlockwindows.com/visual-studio-11-beta-system-requirements/ , the system requirements for XP is Windows 7 or 8.
Is there any way work-around for this?Appreciate your help.
Regards,
Jaleel

Hello Jaleel,
Thanks for your post. And based on this Microsoft official site, the following operating systems are supported of VS2012 RC:
•Windows 7 (x86 and x64)
•Windows 8 Release Preview (x86 and x64)
•Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64)
•Windows Server 2012 RC (x64)
So I am afraid you can't install VS2012 RC on the Windows XP machines.
Thanks.

Thanks Vicky for the reply.
Any idea why it is not supporting? I could not see any reasons in any of these websites.
I am wondering is there any chance of supporting Windows XP as well in the final release. I am not sure what I see in this blog http://blogs.msdn.com/b/vcblog/archive/2012/06/15/10320645.aspx is completely related C++ compiler. Please see the paragraph ,
Enhancing Multi-targeting
"Later this fall, Microsoft will provide an update to Visual Studio 2012 that will enable C++ applications to target Windows XP. This update will make the necessary modifications to the Visual C++ 2012 compiler, runtime, and libraries to enable developers to create applications and DLLs that run on Windows XP and higher versions as well as Windows Server 2003 and higher."

Hi Jaleel,
I am sorry that I can't figure out you one publish Microsoft official document shows us why VS2012 RC is not supported to install on the Windows XP machines. And if you indeed want VS2012 RC to support Windows XP OS, I think you can consider submitting one feature request on the Microsoft UserVoice site: http://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio
And for the paragraph you quoted above, I think it indicate that there are some improvements for Visual C++ 2012 compiler so that the compiled applications can run on the Windows XP machines.
Thanks.

You are confusing 2 different concepts...
VS 2012 can only be installed on Windows 7+.
It can *produce* applications that can run on XP. It cannot be installed on XP, or even Vista.

Is that official or is that an RC limitation?

Official. Windows XP is 10+ years old, and developer tools as far as running on a host don't have a need to support such old technologies. You can still produce applications with VS 2012 that will run on XP, and thats the important part.

My employer (a top 25 bank) will be on XP for another couple of years; Win7 is just now approaching the end of the test cycle.

Windows XP is 10+ years old
To Kudzu22: Windows XP SP3 is much newer though. I find this limitation to be pretty artificial. If guys in Microsoft wants they could support XP easily, but unfortunately this will not bring that much revenue.

Same here. What a pity. :(
