Reclaim MAK license

Question

I'm decommisioning a number of older laptops which had Outlook 2010 installed on them, each of these utilized an MAK license.  If I uninstall outlook 2010, will I get my key Back?  If not, How can I?  One would think slmgr would have an option to 'De-activiate'T Beaucage

The short answer is no.  A MAK key has a certain number of activations associated with it.  Once you use them up, they are gone.  However, MAK has been designed with this scenario in mind.

First, the number of activations on the key is more than the number of licenses you've purchased.  If you've purchased licenses for 20 machines, your MAK key may have 25 activations on it.  If you decommission an old machine, then all you have to do is use the same 25 character MAK key on your new machine and continue with activation.

Once you approach 25 activations in this example, the number of activations will automatically increase by a little bit to give you some buffer, up to a certain extent.  Therefore, my recommendation would be to continue using your MAK key on your new machines and activating Office online.

If you start getting errors after using up all your activations (you probably shouldn't given what you've described), then please give Microsoft support a call so they can either give you a new key or increase the number of activations on your current key.

To see how many MAK activations you have left on your key, please check the VLSC site or download the VAMT 2.0 tool:

Hi Tim Beaucage

Thank you for using Microsoft Office for IT Professionals Forums.

From your description, I understand that  you need to get MAK license. If there is any misunderstanding, please feel free to let me know.

Before uninstall office 2010 ,please use the command: cscript ospp.vbs /?

Note: The Office Software Protection Platform script (ospp.vbs script) enables you to configure volume editions of Office 2010 client products. You must open a command prompt by using administrator permissions and navigate to the folder that contains the script.

More detailed information about  Tools to configure client computers in Office 2010 you can refer to this link:

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

Hope that helps.

Sincerely

Is there a special microsoft support number we should be calling for this?  I'm looking for someone to talk to about our MAK licenses being all used up.  Thanks!

1. call the Activation Call Center (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/Licensing/existing-customer/activation-centers.aspx) , press 4 for Open License then 2 for other reason ( not office )

Explain you want your MAK increase and the Parent Open ID and Open License , they will add another 50 available in 24 hours
