Manually triggering updates in Office 2013

Question

Saturday, February 23, 2013 5:09 PM | 2 votes

Hi,

Does anybody know how to manually trigger an update in Office 2013?

How to update immediately rather than auto /
scheduled?

Updating via Windows/Microsoft Updates doesn't seem to work??

Many thanks.

Hi,

is it Office365 or click-to-run or MSI ?
Which edition of Office? (H&S, H&B, STD, PRO, PROPLUS, etc)

It's click-to-run H&S, H&B and Pro, wether installed via online streaming or using the "Install from a disc" option and installing from the 2GB image file

I've found Scheduled Task "Office Automatic Updates" which runs:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64\integratedoffice.exe RUNMODE RERUNMODE modetorun updatedetection modeargs reschedulemode tasktrigger scheduledtask updateuitype background

but running this doesn't appear to do much! I'm hoping there's a set of parameters for integratedoffice.exe which will make it check for updates RIGHT NOW, and preferebly with some sort of UI feedback.

Many thanks

As far as I know, click-to-run versions can't be updated manually.

EDIT: I stand corrected. See replies below.

i find that very hard to believe, if it can be updated by a schedule there must be a way to trigger the same command

I asked the same question several weeks ago.  I was informed the updates will be added to Microsoft Update after they are pushed out through Office.   http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/officeitpro/thread/7a5c798f-2b57-4d0c-9a85-eff45a247ff2.

I have auto updates disabled, so I will find out what Microsoft Update offers after the next batch of Office updates.

The MSI-based Professional Plus updates happily via Windows Update in the traditional way (I've installed it on a test machine) but I've got a horrible feeling that Click-to-Run based H&S, H&B and Pro wont get any updates this way.

I can sort of trigger updates by running a crude batch file:

C:
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64"
integratedoffice.exe updatedetection
integratedoffice.exe updatedownloadprompt

but it's a bit hit and miss! Can someone improve on this? Does anyone have any details of command line parameters that can be used with integratedoffice.exe ?

I just wrote a blog post on how to manually force a update as a user of the Office 365 ProPlus Click To Run

I found that if you do the following you can always trigger manual updates for Office 2013.

  1. In the registry go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\ClickToRun\propertyBag"

  2. Add a string value named "updatetoversion" and set the data to your desired version (must be a recognized version in http://support.microsoft.com/gp/office-2013-click-to-run) such as 15.0.4551.1512.  This is KEY in making this work.

  3. Make the following values are set to something that starts with http://officecdn.microsoft.com so that the updates are grabbed from Microsoft.  Here are what mine are set to (removed product ID just in case yours is different).      *
***All values are found in key location outlined in step 1.*

    • baseurl” = “http://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/*\<Product ID>*/Office/Data/15.0.4517.1005(This version was my base version at install, do not change it if already set.  If not, set to whatever your base version was at install)

    • updatebaseurl” = “http://officecdn.microsoft.com”  (Make sure this one matches)

    • wwwbaseurl” = “http://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/*\<Product ID>*”

  1. To Find your Product ID go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\15.0\ClickToRun\ProductReleaseIDs\Active\Stream"

  2. You will see value names that include the path of your install.  Don’t use that ID, look at what the data of that key is set to.  Such as “http://officecdn.microsoft.com/pr/<Product ID>/Office/Data/15.0.4551.1011/stream.x64.en-us.dat” and pull out your Product ID.  Ensure all the keys in Step 3 are in the format I listed but with YOUR Product’s ID in place of <Product ID>.

  3. Now run the batch file that has the following content.  (Use ClientX86 for 32-bit) **
    cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64"
    integratedoffice.exe updatedetection
    integratedoffice.exe updatedownloadprompt

    **

  4. If it does not work correctly every time, break into 2 batch files and run one right after the other.*
    Batch file 1*
    cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64"
    integratedoffice.exe updatedetection*

    Batch file 2*
    cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64"
    **integratedoffice.exe updatedownloadprompt
    **

  5. Good luck!

I installed secunia psi which asked me to install the Microsoft windows update.  I agreed and it forwarded me to http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/thanks.aspx?ln=en&&thankspage=5

it asked me if I wanted to install the windows update.  I said yes, then it did a windows update again.  This time it found all of the missing office updates.

I can't believe something so simple has to be made so difficult.  WHAT ARE YOU DOING MICROSOFT?  Don't even get me started on the metro UI.

Note that the link you posted assumes that you are running Windows XP. To update a click-to-run version of Office, try the workarounds in the replies posted in this thread.

Open Word > Create a blank document > Go to File > Account

Under Update Options (in Office Updates) select 'Disable Updates'. Wait a few seconds and re-enable updates by selecting 'Enable Updates'. If there are updates available, this will trigger new updates. Again, it's much better to manage this trough Windows Updates.

Old thread, but I've been searching for this answer for a few weeks and just came across this and one other post that helped me to update my Office 2013 Pro CTR installation on Windows 7 Pro.

First, I turned on "Automatic Updates", though Office was not running updates, I had to turn this on for the process to work (I normally keep it turned off).

Next, following the command structure found on TechNet Blog (see below).  I ran the below command to update to SP1 (had to do this stepwise, it didn't work otherwise):

c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64>officec2rclient.exe /update user
updatetoversion=15.0.4569.1507 displaylevel=true

This successfully updated to Office 2013 SP1. Once SP1 was installed, I opened Word 2013, went to "Account", and then to "Update Options", and selected "Update Now" (this being available only as of SP1).

This in turn updated me to 15.0.4893.1002 (the most current version) per the Office Update History page (see below).

It took me a while to figure this out. Hoping this can help someone else.

the command below save my time

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\ClientX64\integratedoffice.exe RUNMODE RERUNMODE modetorun updatedetection

After run that command, now our Office was updated to 15.0.4963.1002 and now we realized that the button has the option 'Update now'.
