Hi ran,
If you want to search the AD contacts in SharePoint, the contacts object should be imported into SharePoint.
In order to import an AD object into SharePoint, it must have certain properties that are mapped to corresponding properties in SharePoint. Contact objects in AD don't have some of these properties.
Therefore AD Contacts cannot be imported into SharePoint, and SharePoint could not use the people search to search the AD Contacts without some settings.
References:
As a workaround, we can create a standard SharePoint Contacts list.
1. Create a standard SharePoint Contacts list.
2. Including this list as part of the People search scope.
3. Configure Search Metadata Properties to bring across the correct Site Columns, ultimately, showing both Real users and Contacts from Contact List in the same People Search results.
You can also refer to below articles for more information:

If by Contacts you mean user accounts, the simple answer is Yes. If these are plain and simple Contacts, no account behind, than FIM (engine behind this cannot project these), so NO!
You need to configure User Profile Synchronization Service Application (there you'll get to choose all containers that you want synchronized), which can also accept multiple connections which you'll even allow you to connect to multiple User Stores.
There could be an alternative via Business Connectivity Services, but can get tricky.
