After installing SP2010 I notice it is stopped - what is it? When do I need to turn it on?
And why are there GUIDs instead of App pool names?
Thanks if you can help
Cheers
Jonj

According to this blog "it’s absolutely OK that this Application Pool is stopped".

I checked two of my 2010 farms and it is stopped on both.

Hi JonJames,
SharePoint Web Services Root Application Pool is Stopped by Design and you should not worry about that being Stopped.
Thanks,

Hi JonJames,
To answer your second question; the application pools have GUIDs for the names because you most likely used the Central Administration wizard to provision those service applications. When you use the wizard the application pools and the service application databases will have GUIDs in them as it's a simple way to make sure that the name is not in use yet.
