Question
Saturday, March 19, 2011 10:06 AM
I have downloaded the iso file from the official microsoft website and the extracted all its contents and started the Setup.exe file
everything went nice but then it started rolling back, i left it
i know that some people had this update rolling back but then it completed successfully but this wasn't my case
the setup ended with a screen saying:
"Installation Did Not Succeed
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 has not been installed because:
The upgrade cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists
For more information about this problem, see the log file.
For information about the most current version of the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 see Windows Update.
When you dose this wizard, you will be prompted to send a problem report to Microsoft. For more information, see Microsoft Error Reporting Service."
By the way, i should point out that during the roll back, the setup asked for the installation files of Visual Studio, actually it asked for the file vc_setup.exe
More, it is worth to mention that when i first ran the setup.exe file (the sp1 update main executable), it gave an error that it didn't find the right version of visual studio on my system so i reinstalled Visual Studio 2010, and after that the updating process started but i got this issue now
After the got that error for the first time, i restarted my PC and ran the setup again, then it found less components to update, but it kept ending up with error. I repeated the steps again and again (restrating pc and running the setup again) but i always got the same components that need to be updated and it always ended up with error. I repeated this for 5 times and i always got the same error
The components that are left to be updated are:
SetupUtility
Service Pack 1 Package
Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2010 Object Model - ENU
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Performance Collection Tools - ENU
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate - ENU
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 ADO.NET Entity Framework Tools
Dotfuscator Software Services - Community Edition
VSTO 4.0 Runtime x64
Microsoft Visual C++ Compilers 2010 Standard x86 - 10.0.40219
Microsoft Visual C++ Compilers 2010 Standard x64 - 10.0.40219
NDP40-KB2468871.exe
and as usual for those whose can comprehend to deal with those creapy log files, here is mine:
Thanks in advance for anyone who will assist me and i really appreciate that!

I found something new
I discovered that the problem is from NDP40-KB2468871.exe it is failing and return the error code 0x8007066a
I discovered this when i opened my log file in chrome not in IE8
I don't know why the log files looked differently in these two explorers, in IE8 it was too long and only the first 100 lines were visible, in chrome the log wasn't verbose

Hi,
Thanks for your post.
First, there are several things I would like to clarify with you:
- What is your OS version?
- What is the Visual Studio version you have installed?
The error code 0x8007066a, decimal 164 means "ERROR_PATCH_TARGET_NOT_FOUND", which could be translated to "The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch."
Since you have already re-install your OS, I would suggest perform the steps below to install the Visual Studio 2010 SP1:
1. Firstly, please manually uninstall Visual Studio
o Go to Control Panel -> Uninstall a program;
o Check whether there is Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 exists in the program list. If so, please remove it first;
o Remove all instances of Visual Studio 2010 products;
o Uninstall any supporting products. You can find the uninstall order in this link: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/e2h7fzkw.aspx#uninstalling
o You can use this tool to ensure complete uninstall: Visual Studio 2010 Uninstall Utility
2. Before install Visual Studio, please finish the steps below first:
o Turn off your anti-virus/antispyware software during installation;
o Install the latest Windows updates from the Windows Update site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
o Complete or dismiss Windows Update before installation. (And don't forget to turn it on later)
o Clean your %temp% folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%);
3. Run the Visual Studio setup again (with Administrator privilege: right-click the installer -> Run as administrator)
4. If the Visual Studio 2010 could be installed without error, you can then try to install the SP1 package (with Administrator privilege).
If the installation still failed, would you please follow the steps below to collect the installation log files?
· Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder with the Log Collection Tool
Collect tool: http://go.microsoft.com/?LinkId=8967044
· You can find the vslogs.cab file in the %temp% folder.
Send the vslogs.cab file to me (E-mail: [email protected]).
Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.
Waiting to hear from you.

I followed all your steps, uninstalled everything, ran some registry cleaners, cleaned all temporary files, ran the uninstall utility you provided in the complete mode, and restarted my pc
(my pc has all the updates installed!)
after that i installed Visual Studio 2010 without a glitch, it was perfect, then i restarted my pc
after i ran the SP1 update, it all went great till that 'NDP40-KB2468871.exe' and it started rolling back, while rolling back it also asked for the image of Visual Studio and i eneded up at last with same error message i was getting
this is really annoying
anyway, i think there is no other solution than giving my pc a new format,
..and yeah, i'm gonna send you the logs
Thanks a lot for trying to help!

Hi un-limited,
Thanks for posting back.
Recently I have seen several scenarios about the Visual Studio 2010 SP1 installation failed at component “NDP40-KB2468871.exe”. Please see:
· http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/351571bb-fa06-4227-8081-c9a6add9fe58/
· http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vssetup/thread/b91f22d1-a67b-4415-af47-202ec7696173
The install package failed deterministically when installing NDP40-KB2468871, which is the update package for framework 4.0. You can download and install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4 KB2468871 from the link below:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=41BDCE1F-3CB3-44BB-9B33-23A1B8C99AC3
Also, please try open the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\eventlog\Security\ServiceModel 4.0.0.0, then changing the key permissions to give full control to Administrators.
I hope this helps.
