Question
Wednesday, January 2, 2019 7:16 PM
While attempting to reinstall my Visual Studio Professional 2017 here at work, I receive the error message in the subject line:
Cannot access a disposed object. Object Name: 'ProductInstallerCache'.
I took a screenshot of the error, but I'm not permitted to post the picture. I'm not sure how I verify myself to allow for that.
I removed the VS installer and downloaded an updated version hoping that would work, but it didn't.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Greg

Hi GregDeckard,
Welcome to the MSND forum.
Firstly, please enter this link to verify your account: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/dc4002e4-e3de-4b1e-9a97-3702387886cc/verify-account-42?forum=reportabug . after verification your account successfully, you could attach the screenshots for your thread.
For more accurately diagnosing your issue further, I need to confirm some info here:
- When did you receive this error message? Open VS or Open you project or debug or other else?
- Before reinstalled VS 2017, could you run this project fine?
- What’s your project type? and development language?
- Could you create a simple new project with same type to test if the error exists or not?
- Share the error message screenshot.
Looking forwards your reply.

I have also been having this problem for about 2 weeks now.
Last week I engaged Microsoft Installation support and after following all the steps he suggested (Uninstall any instances of VS that were installed, Uninstall VS installer, Run the InstallerCleanup.exe, Delete VS Registry Keys, Reboot Machine, Disable Anti-Virus, and run VS Installer as Administrator) the installation still fails.
The message that displays when the installation fails is always the same:
"Error: Cannot Access a disposed object.
Object Name: 'ProductInstallerCache'"
I have deleted every installed application relating to Visual Studio including SQL Server Management Studio, but installation continues to fail.
To answer your questions:
- This error message pops up at the part of the installation where you are to choose your 'Workloads/Individual Components/Language Packs/Installation Locations'. The error is displayed in a pop-up box and at the bottom of the 'Installation Details' section of the installer window.
- N/A
- Project Type doesn't apply but this is for the English Language.
- Unable to create anything as I am unable to get Visual Studio to install
- I cannot attach an image of the error due to my account status as well.
Thanks in Advance for any help!

Hi Randy,
Could you kindly use the Microsoft Visual Studio and .NET Framework Log Collection Tool to gather the installation log? After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here. I will do my best to check log and diagnose it accurately.
More, did you try to “repair” VS in installer windows?
You’d better verify your account as follow the link I shared above. Then share the error screenshot and log in next reply. J
Waiting for your reply.

Hello May -
I apologize for not replying to this sooner, but I just wanted to report that I was unable to get VS to install. I ended up reformatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows. I was able to reinstall VS without any issues after that.
Sorry that this answer doesn't help anyone troubleshoot this issue if they are experiencing the same problem but it is what I did to get the install to work.
Thanks for time,
Randy
