Windows Security keeps asking for smartcard

Question

Friday, December 20, 2019 9:39 AM

Hi all,

I'm working with Windows 10 Pro build 18363 on an HP Zbook 15 G3.

After using an USB smartcard device for some minutes and then disconnecting, windows keeps asking me to insert a smart card. This has been going for weeks now.

I've already disabled smart card log on as per another thread I found here, but the problem continues.

Any ideas?

TIA

Fernando

To be more precise, a small window keeps appearing saying:

  • Windows Security
  • Smart Card
  • Select a smart card device
  • Connect a smart card
  • OK / Cancel

Hi,

For your issue, since you have disabled Smart card login but still have no assistance, suggest you disable Smart Card Plug and Play Service, kindly refer to the following steps and check if it works:

  1. Press Windows + R key to launch Run command.

  2. Type gpedit.msc in the Run dialog box and click OK.

  3. Navigate to “Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Local Policies>Security Options>Interactive logon: Require smart cards”

  4. Right-click “Interactive logon: Require smart cards” and select “Edit.” In the Properties dialog, select “Disabled” to turn off this service

  5. Now navigate to “Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Smart Card>Turn On Smart Card Plug and Play Service”

  6. Right-click “Turn On Smart Card Plug and Play Service” and select “Edit.” In the Properties dialog, select “Disabled” to turn off this service and remove the smart card option from the login screen. Click “Apply” and “OK” to save your changes.

Hope can help you. Have a nice day~

Kiki

Hi Kiki,

Unfortunately my Windows does not have exactly those options in gpedit. Here's what I have:

Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options / Interactive logon: Require Windows Hello for Business or smart card: Disabled

Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Smart Card / Turn On Smart Card Plug and Play Service: Disabled

Am I missing some other config?

Thanks

Fernando

Hi Fernando,

That's really strange, since that, you could try the following methods:

1.Update the driver for the smart card reader to the latest version.

2.Open Command Prompt as Admin and type the following command: net start certpropsvc, and then press ENTER.

Hope can help you. Have a nice day!

The problem finally went away when I connected a different smart card device the other day.

After disconnecting the device, windows never again asked for the smartcard.

It's one of those mysteries that will never be solved... :-)

Thanks

Fernando
