Disabling "Automatically donwnload manufacturer's app and custom icons available for your devices" not working,

Question

Hi

I am developing application where I use Bluetooth PAN connection. After Pairing with my Bluetooth device there is a step where I must open "Devices and printers" dialog, select my device right click on it and choose Connect using Access Point. The problem is that after pairing the device is appearing in devices in printers list only after certain period, usually after 2-3 minutes.

When I go to: This PC (right click) -> Properties -> Advanced system settings -> Hardware tab -> Device installation Settings and select option NO for "Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for you devices" then my Bluetooth device appears on the “Devices and Printers” list right away after pairing.

Unfortunately, I notice that on my different Windows 10 machine when I set the same option, my device appears with delay. I found a workaround for that:

After setting KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching\SearchOrderConfig to 0 my Bluetooth device is available on the list right away.

In conclusion to fix my issue:

Windows 10 Pro Version 1607 OS Build: 1493.0 – I need to disable automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons.

Windows 10 Pro Version: 1607 OS Build: 14393.1066 – I need to change registry key.

Why there is a discrepancy between Windows versions? Is this is some kind of Bug? I have not found any documented behavior change.

Best Regards

Yes, your behavior is correct, if UI doesn’t work, modify registry is an effective way.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching

If this value is set to 0, then driver updates via WU are blocked.

0 Never install driver software from Windows Update

1 Always install the best driver software from Windows Update

I’d not suggest installing driver updates for your hardware via Windows Update.

I doesn’t think it is a bug, maybe some Windows components broken leads to current situation, you could update system to the latest build 14393.1198 or 1703 version to check result.

Regards

The workaround is not working for me.

Discovered network devices (mainly printers) are still installing Windows Apps.
