I use a VPN connection to a terminal server. I can be in the process of transferring files or working on the remote site when the VPN disconnects. Remote desktop is set to automatically reconnect but it does not and I have open the VPN setting and manually connect. I have timed it and it only 3 minutes or so before it disconnects.
I have checked my router and that is not the cause. My Win 7 laptop happily connects and maintains the connection until I manually disconnect which is perfect as I sometimes need to stay connected for the entire working day.

Are you using default VPN in Windows or other VPN software?

Hi S.Leake,
Are you using default VPN in Windows or 3rd party VPN software?
If you are using a 3rd party VPN software, it is suggested to contact the vendors’ support, they may have more suitable solutions.
If you are using default VPN in Windows, we need more information to troubleshoot this issue.
Please check if there are any related information recorded in event view.
(Event Viewer>Windows Logs>System and Event Viewer>Applications and Services logs> Microsoft>Windows>VPN-Client).
Also, we could temporary turn off firewall and security software to have a test.
Best regards.

I have tried all the things you suggested and it seems that it could be the firewall in my Avast Internet security that is causing the problem. Having fiddled with the firewall I found a log saying "Firewall has detected a change to your network..." and the times match the disconnection. As I have the same system on my Win 7 laptop I am surprised that it is causing problems on my Win 10 machine. However I shall contact Avast and see what they have to say. I will let you know the result

Avast Support have been brilliant (and so have you) but the problem is still not resolved. I am now having additional problems with the machine including WiFi dropping and refusing to reconnect; file explorer "falling over" and s have decided to reset the machine and start over. Watch this space because I could be back!
