Hi,
I have a windows 2012 server running SQL 2012
The disk has been partitioned into a system (c:) and data (D:) on a single disk
The system partition needs to be extended but can not be because of the data partition.
How can I move the data partition to a new disk so that I can extend the system partition?
Thanks

Yes you can (c) ...
Use something like Paragon Partition Manager (they also have a free edition) and you'll be fine. See:
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/pm-express/
There are other tools from say Acronis and Quest doing pretty much the same.

Hey i suppose this would be the most helpful post on the same..
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/display-doc.php?name=moving-space-between-partitions
Moreover or just make the volume larger.
Thanks.

The free version does not run under windows server...

you don't have to move, just try partition assistant "allocate free space", I think this will help you. "extend partition wizard" also OK. if you are still worried, backup your data(here I recommend you try aomei backupper) before doing this. good luck

All right! The sever partition space often cannot be extended with the Disk Management tools. Therefore, in your case, you can take chances with some partition resizing tools online and let them add the free space of your data partition to your system partition, like IM-Magic Partition Resizer Free, GParted and more.
Whatever happens, always back up sever data well in advance.

I would suggest you to use "Add Mirror" over the volume.
Then, select the disk for the new Mirror, and after it finishes "Syncing", you can delete the old partition.
For sure, I would recommend you to backup your data before.
