Windows 2003 as NTP Server

Question

Friday, July 15, 2011 4:35 AM

Hi

We wanted to configure Windows 2003 Servers as a NTP Server which will

1) sync with external source and

2)allow internal devices to sync with this Windows 2003 Server. Ex :internal Network devices and AD Server will get update from this Windows 2003 Server and it will act as a internal time source.

We are not abel to find any specific article to configure windows 2003 Server as NTP Server, kindly help with some reference articles.

Regards Mahesh

Hello,

what I recommend is configuring the PDC emulator to sync time with an external NTP server and let all your domain computers sync time with the PDC.

In addition, basically the Windows time service follows the domain/forest hierarchy, and works out-of-the box without requiring changes, alterations or anything else. Of course you would set the domain controller that holds the PDC Emulator Role in the Forest Root to sync with an external time source. All otehr machine in the hierachy will automatically get time from this machine through the time hierarchy. No other changes other than settign the external time source would be needed.

The hierarchy is show in the following diagram taken fromhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773013(WS.10).aspx:
