disable these files might be harmful to your computer via group policy

Question

Tuesday, January 7, 2020 12:49 AM

Greetings,

When the preview pane is turned on in file explorer and a user clicks on their home drive and then an excel document they get the 'harmful' message. How do I turn this off via group policy?

I have edited the Site to Zone assignment and added things like 'file://h:' and 'file://10.1.*' and 'file://server' but nothing seems to allow the preview pane to work.

Thanks

David Z

Create a GPO and enable three settings. Related descriptions and values explained in citations.

Both Computer Configuration and User Configuration has these:

Policies \ Administrative Templates \ Windows Components \ Internet Explorer

Internet Control Panel

  • Security Page

  • Intranet Zone Template > Enabled > Low

  • Site to Zone Assignment List > Enabled > Show...

    Valuename = yourserver

    • Value = 1 (Intranet zone)

    Intranet Zone

Show security warning for potentially unsafe files > Enabled > Enable

Hi David Zemdegs,

Thank you for posting in our forum

Open Internet Explorer > Internet Options > Security tab
Select Local Intranet and click on Sites.
Click on Advanced and add your DFS Root in format: file://domain.local
To solve it on all machines in your workgroup by setting a Group Policy:

User Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer > Internet Control Panel > Security Page.
Enable Policy called Site to Zone Assignment List.
Click Show and your DFS Root in format file://domain.local (value for Local Intranet should be 1).

Best wishes
Vicky

Thanks.

That didnt work. Im wondering about the exact syntax/format of the value of the server.

I just added the dns alias. Do I need an fqdn? Do I need the 'file:' prefix? or '\' prefix?

Hi,

thanks for your patience.

After my experiment again, following my steps in my environment can be successful.

So I want to confirm with you that what you described is not working, is the GPO successfully deployed but not applied, or the GPO is not successfully

deployed.

Best wishes

Vicky

Your solution mentions a DFR root. We are not using DFS.

Sadly it wasnt helpful. We have decided that we do not have the time to investigate this further and will live with not being able to use this feature.
