Question

Hi all,
We have a number of sites which have L2TP / IKEv2 VPNs configured (various server/router hardware and configurations). In all cases though we use the Windows 10 in-built vpn client to connect and all are configured with pre-shared keys and typically RADIUS authentication linked to a Windows NAP server.
For a large number (if not all) of our clients we regularly see the WAN Miniport drivers locking up and you have to either logout/login or manually restart the drivers in device manager to get them going again. These clients all use different versions of Windows 10 and different hardware configurations but the problem is always the same on each.
The VPN client will usually get as far as "verifying username / password" and not get any further. In the event log you will see different RAS errors, usually 79 I think it is or 89 (whichever the standard, couldn't connect error code is. when it connects successfully you also will sometimes find that the network connection on the client (via all adaptors) is completely broken after disconnecting the VPN and can only be fixed by disabling/enabled the WAN Miniport drivers.
Anyone seen this before and know of a fix?
Cheers,
Olly

Hi,
Do you mean that VPN stuck on "connecting" in windows 10?
There is a workaround for your reference.
- go to Windows Settings > Network & Internet > VPN menu.
- select a VPN from the menu and Connect.
Best regards,
Travis

Hi Travis,
Thanks for your reply! I think we are talking about two different issues here. In Windows 10 1903 a new bug has been introduced which causes the issue you describe. In this scenario there are no RASClient errors in the event log, it's just that the button for VPN in the task bar doesn't seem to do anything.
In the issue I'm talking about, you will see RASClient errors in the event log when you try to connect. You will also sometimes find that the virtual network adapter gets stuck i.e. if you run ipconfig / all you can see the adapter in a corrupt state even if in the control panel the adapter appears to be disconnected. It will often retain an IP address and say "disconnecting" but never disconnnect.
Sorry I should have explained this in the original post
Cheers,
Olly

Hi,
Have you tried reinstalling WAN Miniport driver?
* if you run ipconfig / all you can see the adapter in a corrupt state even if in the control panel the adapter appears to be disconnected.*
I still can't get the key to the problem. could you provide more information such as screenshot?
Best regards,
Travis

How would you go about reinstalling these drivers? As soon as it happens again I'll get a screen grab of the ipconfig results
