Unable to Change Advanced Sharing Settings in Windows 10

Question

Friday, March 3, 2017 1:34 PM

So, I want to share files through a VPN via a shared folder, so I went to the advanced sharing settings to turn on file sharing for all networks. But after I clicked the radio button for:

"Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public Folders,"

I clicked Save Changes only to find that when I went back to advanced sharing settings, the radio button was reverted back to what was selected previously.

I've been trying to fix this issue forever and have tried everything I can find on the internet. It's starting to bother me a lot.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks.

Actually, I ended up re-installing Windows 10, and now it works fine. TA-DA! For every problem you may have with your garbage OS, just RE-INSTALL IT. Microsoft doesn't really want to help you. They just want your money. It may SEEM that they are really trying to help, but in reality, if the WANTED to be helpful, they would release an OS that WILL NEVER HAVE THESE KINDS OF PROBLEMS IN THE FIRST PLACE. Lots of people HATE Windows 10 because its too protective. If you release a version of Windows 10 that gets rid of all the security garbage for those of us who actually KNOW how to use Windows, THESE ISSUES WOULDN'T BE AN ISSUE. NO INTELLIGENT PC USERS GIVE A DIP-S*** ABOUT THE OS. ALL THEY WANT IS TO USE THE PROGRAMS THAT THEY HAVE PURCHASED. I just got a new desktop computer. Installed Windows 7. ITS BEAUTIFUL MAN! It hasn't had a SINGLE ISSUE, and it does whatever the Hell I wan't it to, EXCEPT modify system files, which makes sense. If I had any issue on Windows 7, I could have fixed it MYSELF. Thanks Microsoft, thank you for sucking so much.

Hi,

Have you check if the Firewall has configured to allow Network discovery for your network location?

Since we need admin privilege to enable this feature, please try to enable build-in admin to check if we can enable this feature under this admin account.

Also, Please check if all these services run properly, restart them to check the results:

  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Connections
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper

If there is any error when you restart these services, please let me know.

For further troubleshooting, please check the Event log and post back the error one related to this issue.

I enabled the Administrator account and checked windows firewall, and network discovery is enabled. The service Computer Browser gave me the following error.

"Windows could not start the Computer Browser service on Local Computer.

Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

The DCHP Client refused to stop.

The DNS Client, Network Connections, and Network Location Awareness restarted fine.

The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) restart button is grayed out.

The service Server is disabled, and the start button is grayed out, so I set the startup type to automatic and restarted my computer, its now running.

The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper restarted fine.

Hi Elias,

Seems that some services went wrong.

Please run following commands to repair this issue: Open CMD with Running as administrator.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow

Then see if your issue can be resolved.

After running those two commands and restarting, the problem still persists. Windows still won't let me enable file sharing.

Also, Computer Browser still fails to start:

"Windows could not start the Computer Browser service on Local Computer.
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Hi,

Please check the dependency services under Computer browser service, expand and restart each one to see which cause this problem.

"Windows could not stop the Network Store Interface Service on local computer.

Error 1061: The service cannot accept control messages at this time."

Hi,

This error means that there is a temporary mismatch between the requested control and the state of the service to be controlled. The service may be in a state of start-pending, stop-pending, or stopped.

Please wait a few minutes, then retry your operation.

If currently all other dependency services can restart well, we could consider that this issue related to registry settings.

Please reproduce this issue and during this process, start Process monitor to capture the system events, then, save out the PML files, upload onto OneDrive and share the link here for our research.
