Is is possible to remove a VM from an availability set?

Question

Sunday, September 4, 2016 8:15 PM

Hi, I have just noticed an error with my availability set and I would like to change it.

But it will not let me remove the VM?

It says that I have to re-create the VM!!!!!

That is crazy.

Is this correct?

Thanks

Hi Monika,

I think I may have found the answer.

Set Azure Resource Manager VM AvailabilitySet

Hello ,

Thank you for posting on the Azure forums!

You can remove a VM to/from an availability set without deleting/re-creating.

If you're using PowerShell, you have:

  • Remove-AzureAvailabilitySet for classic VMs
  • Remove-AzureRmAvailabilitySet for Resource Manager VMs

Likewise, you can do this in the portal. For example, here's one of my 'classic' VMs in an availability set:

The highlighted blue box shows that my VM is in an availability set. To remove it, I just select the item above it (Not part of an availability set) and save:

Hope this helps!

Monika
