Can't mount iso files anymore, Problem with NTFS

Question

Sunday, May 21, 2017 4:23 PM | 2 votes

Problem: Make sure the file is an NTFS volume and isn't an compressed folder or volume.

Happens when I try to mount iso files. Any iso files, even ones that worked before.

Since the last 4 days, I am not able to mount any iso files to the default Windows 10 iso drive.

Using any other software like Daemon tools or Power ISO works just fine.

I need help. Why did this happen and how can I resolve it? FYI, I didn't change any settings on my PC.

Thanks in advance.

-Sami.

Copy the file to other localization. It works for me

Hi Sami 1999,

I suppose it causes from changed file-association.
Please try:

  1. Right-click on the ISO file in Windows/File Explorer
  2. Select [Open with...], instead of [Mount]

  3. Select "Windows Explorer", with check on [Always use this app to open .iso files]
      and [OK]

Hi ,

Based on your description, this issue occurred recently, we could perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point if there is available restore point. Also, you can try to mount ISO in PowerShell to have a test, follow steps in the following link.

There are plenty of drive letters left. It was drive J fyi.

One interesting thing is I can still mount iso files that are 500 mb. But the bigger iso files cant be mounted anymore.

Mount-DiskImage : The requested operation could not be completed due to a virtual disk system limitation.  Virtual
hard disk files must be uncompressed and unencrypted and must not be sparse.

This is the error I get in powershell @Rick_Li

Try to Eject all ISO from drives and then Mount one ISO file.

Monday, May 22, 2017 10:38 AM

I've done a System Restore and the iso files are working again.

But my PC is downloading the security updates again. I'll let you guys know what happens after the updates are being installed.

If it's caused by  the updates, then we need a fix.

Monday, May 22, 2017 11:15 AM

Okay, I've updated my PC and the problem started again!

It's related with the recent security update for the Anniversary Version of Windows 10.

We need a fix asap.

Same problem here

Uninstalling the last security update solves the problem

Monday, May 22, 2017 1:03 PM

Yep same problem, i tried to uninstall the last security windows update and it works !

Hi ,

Based on your description, this issue seems to be caused by a security update? What is the exact KB number?
We can uninstall it, then set up to temporarily prevent this security update from reinstalling, take it as a workaround.

Thanks a lot @matmas632

It worked.  So all you gotta do is move the iso to another local disk and it will work. Also, moving it back again to its original location then works.

please ! how do i uninstall that latest security update?

Wednesday, May 24, 2017 4:11 PM

@Faisal Hamad, Search for update in start menu and you will find view installed updates which will show u a list of installed update. You can find the latest security update there aswell.

Also, while moving the file to different location fixes the issue, I found out that downloading iso will still give th same error. So you will have to keep moving them which is inconvenient.

I hope MS fix this thing.

Copy the file to other localization means?

Sunday, May 28, 2017 11:40 AM

Try copying it to another folder I guess? I had my iso file in my downloads folder, but when I copied it to the desktop, I was able to open it. Hope this helps!

Same thing here. I wonder why this happens, surely it's a bug in Windows 10, and apparently as old as 2016.

[Solved]

I had same problem. Some people say that they can not mount because of size.

Here is my solution: Right click -> Open With -> WinRar

Extract all files in folder and that's it :)

I hope it will help you.

It does help. But it ruins the purpose of iso files. They are virtual disks. Nevertheless, yeah, winrar & 7zip can extract them.

The culprit is KB4019472 - remove it and everything will work fine again.

There isn't an update with this number on my list

Tried that didn't work but what did after reading all these was simply copy/paste into Documents and mount from there. Seems moving the file is the trigger to get it mounted. Thank you and enjoy!

Monday, June 19, 2017 3:50 AM

I moved it to another drive and it worked out...

Tuesday, June 27, 2017 5:09 PM

Hi,

I had the same problem and tried the suggestions on this thread with no success, I tried to move the iso file from my downloads folder to my desktop and it worked.

thanks for the help

Tuesday, July 11, 2017 5:02 AM

I took a pendrive , formatted it to ntfs file system  , copied the iso file there , and it just worked perfectly

Saturday, July 15, 2017 3:30 AM

What do you mean by other localization?

Monday, July 17, 2017 5:39 PM

I had the same problem with a .iso

I was able to mount it after moving the .iso to another folder. You can also move the .iso to another drive (if you have one)

For those who are still facing the issue after copying the file to other localization, proceed as follow:

  • Open PowerShell as admin (We need to remove the sparse flag).
  • enter this code:
fsutil sparse setflag "C:\FilePath\FileName.iso" 0
  • That's it, now try to mount.

Those who got Access Denied error while entering above code:

  • Open properties of that .iso file.
  • On the General Tab, at the bottom--> Attributes: uncheck read-only
  • If you see Security option too, below attributes, which says this file came from another computer so it is blocked...blah blah, just check on UnBlock and click Apply.
  • Now use above PowerShell command again.
  • You can also check the current status of the file by using below command (optional):
fsutil sparse queryflag "C:\FilePath\FileName.iso"

Note: File path and File name should not contain any space or gap.

Example-

C:\abc\abc.iso (right)

C:\a b c\a b c.iso (wrong)

It totaly worked for me! I have windows 10 (ver. 1607)
Thank you very much!

Wednesday, December 27, 2017 5:20 AM

This is working. This is the exact cause why the file isn't mounted even if it's in a NTFS/non-compressed drive

Monday, April 23, 2018 11:31 PM

Hey this was a great reminder.  I forgot about this!

Thursday, July 19, 2018 10:42 AM

I tried above method, but no luck... it is still the same...
