Installation failure for Visual C++ 2017 redistributable (x64) - 14.10.25017 with error 1714

Hello,

 

I experience an issue I cannot fix. While installation Visual Studio 2017 Community, the installation failed due to the Visual C++ 2017 redistributable (x64) package failing to install. Mentioned reason is because failure when uninstalling previous version of Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) 14.0.24215.

 

I, of course, experience the same issue while trying to install the “Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 x64 Minimum Runtime - 14.10.25017” package directly. During the installation process I am requested to locate a missing file: vc_runtimeMinimum_x64.msi that is supposed to be located there: C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\A1C31BA5-5438-3A07-9EEE-A5FB2D0FDE36}v14.0.23506\packages\vcRuntimeMinimum_amd64\

 

I can confirm indeed that this path does not exist on my computer.

 

The installation fails with:

ERROR 1714.The older version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 x64 Minimum Runtime - 14.10.25017 cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

 

And then with:

0x80070643 - Fatal error during installation.

 

Has somebody already experienced and fix this kind of issue? What would you recommend doing?

Thank you for posting in MSDN forum.

This error shows that the previous Visual C++ Redist remaining that prevents the 2017 version setup.

Please try steps as below:

1. Go to Control Panel--Programs and Features, uninstall all the Visual C++ 2015 Redistribute items.

2. Run Fix it tool to fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

3. Re-run the VS 2017 Community installer as administrator, then click the icon besides 'Launch' and choose 'Repair' to perform a repair and continue the setup process.

Similar problem with me now that I've updated to the Windows 10 October 2018 release and am trying to install the latest Radeon drivers. Visual C++ fails to recognize installation package as valid during Visual C++ 2017 x64 install.

  • It fails to find a valid package at C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\8D50D8C6-1E3D-3BAB-B2B7-A5399EA1EBD1}v14.10.25008\packages\vcRuntimeMinimum_amd64\ so I look around and find it under a different folder, C:\ProgramData\Package Cache\C77195A4-CEB8-38EE-BDD6-C46CB459EF6E}v14.15.26706\packages\vcRuntimeMinimum_amd64\vc_runtimeMinimum_x64.msi.

  • I think the problem is it wants to install 14.10.25008, but it should want the file for 14.15.26706.
    This is clearly interfering with the latest Radeon driver install and the lack of this redist is making the computer super unstable.

  • **I have removed all previous versions at this point. Still doesn't work.

Ok so using the uninstaller to remove a previous 2017 version did the trick!
