Using a scaner to scan documents and save as PDF, the resulting PDFs are corrupt. The PDF file can be opened by Acrobat but cannot be saved (Save As) unless one first 'optimizes' the PDF. The exact error message is 'The document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (8).'Holding down ctrl when accepting the error shows additional detail:' stream source is shorter than specified length.

Hey friend,
Did you take back up of original PDF document? If you have the back up copy, then you can easily restore your corrupted PDF file. If not, then a good solution is required to recover data from this file. I was having the same problem with my PDF document, I searched fro the solution over the internet and luckily I got one. I would like to share it with you - *PDF Repair Kit *

Hi,
The error 8 is a totally generic message, it simply means there is something corrupted in the PDF file's data. First check if you have any backups of this PDF or the original documents.
You might also want to update your Acrobat installation to the latest version, and try again.

To fix the issue, simply choose the File > Print and choose the 'Abobe PDF' option. it creates a brand new uncorrupted file that you can save no problems.

Hi Roger.
If you want to save PDF file on local drive of your machine. Then "Save" option would be activated only if you made some changes to opened document. You can always use "Ctrl+Shift+S" to launch the save as dialog.
If "The document could not be saved" is still encountered, then you need to recover the PDF file. To do so, you need to go through the article - How to Fix Damaged PDF file?
