Local Admin Denied Access to write to hosts. file.

Question

Monday, August 7, 2017 1:57 AM

Previously under other versions of Windows a local administrator had access to windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts.

Now something has changed and access is denied.   DNS resolution "sucks" in Windwos 10 I need performance, not "gee whiz" apps loaded on a work computer.  How do I get access ad an administrator to edit the hosts. file and strip out the "cutesy" unwanted apps?

Previously under other versions of Windows a local administrator had access to windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Try right-click the file, properties and uncheck the read-only attribute.

Hello ,

1) Please do right click on "hosts"and go to properties.

2) Go to security tab.

3) In "select the group or usernames" you have to select the Administrators or  user ID

4) After selecting the target user select EDIT

5) In Permissions for system allow full control.

6) Click apply and OK.

7) Refresh and try it again

Hi emeisen,

Please also test to disable AV software to do a check.

In addition, please also refer to the article below. Try the following workaround:

1.Run Notepad as administrator

2. Copy the hosts file to a different location
