When I right click on my desktop freezes

Question

Monday, November 26, 2018 5:44 PM

I go to create a folder on my desktop. When I right click on my desktop the desktop freezes. The rest of Windows 10 is not frozen. To unfreeze the desktop I must open task manager and restart explorer.

This is on Windows 10 Pro (1809) on a Thinkpad T430

The problem could be related to computer's graphics driver.

You could the update latest driver from the manufacturer's site.

Check the link below too.

thats normally due to incompatible 3rd party software.
You can use ShellExView to disable shell extensions.

Or you use task manager to create a dump file for the hanging explorer process, then share the dump file with us for analysis.

Hi,

Because seeing that your system version is Windows 10 1809, firstly we need to make sure that the drivers have been updated and keep installing update.

This problem happens because some unwanted and unnecessary options are forcefully added to the context menu. These problematic options are added by the graphics card driver software such as nVidia, AMD Radeon, Intel, etc. The problem can be solved by removing these extra unwanted options from the context menu.

Look at the link below to remove GEForce experience from your right-click desktop menu.

Remove NVIDIA Control Panel from Desktop Right-Click Menu

Hey Harry

I suggest you scan the items in the folder you have created, as they might be infected with the virus and creating the problem with the desktop. Also, open the device manager from the start menu and look for drivers and adapters. If you see any warning sign then right click and update the driver software.

Uninstall the recently installed updates in Windows 10

Delete the temporary files from the system and check again
