Question

Hello!
I have small office with Linux-based gateway.
I need to remove Linux, and setup gateway on Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 Standard (installed in Hyper-V virtual machine).
In future I'm going to buy TMG, but now I nedd to use RRAS.
What system requirements for RRAS?
I need perfect work of routing and NAT, without troubles and loosing packages.
1. One CPU core (2.33GHz) is enought or RRAS need a few cores ?
2. How about RAM (0.5-1-2Гб)?
3. RAID 10 SATA is enought or better move VM to SAS LUN?
4. Do I need to reserve some resources for VM with RRAS?
Thank's and sorry for my English!

Hello,
Since you have a small business, system requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2 should be enough: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb414778.aspx

Hi iNikolay,
Thanks for posting here.
May I know how many clients and sessions are we going to handle by this server , especially at same time?
We may first verify our performance base line in order to determine the accurate requirement and get the bottleneck.

I'm not saying it doesn't have to be a VM. It should work fine. It really depends on a few things you didn't mention, such as the number of concurrent users, the physical host's specs: (CPU speed, # of CPUs, RAM, speed of RAM, # of NICs, how many NICs you will dedicate to RRAS guest, etc.). Other factors include how many guests total on the server, such as will you have two DCs, an Exxhange server, SQL, etc? Some of these are heavy resource hitters and can affect performance.
.
Do you have thousands of concurrent users?
.
2. How about RAM (0.5-1-2Гб)?
And I'm not sure what the above quote means from your original post? It looks like an unrecognizable character, or a character in a different locale that I'm not famiiar with.
.
Maybe this can be better answered among the engineers in the HyperV forum:

In addition to Tiger's and Mr. X's suggestions, depending on number of concurrent users, and the fact that the RRAS server will be handling all inbound/outbound traffic, I recommend the RRAS server to be a physical server.
I also recommend to not make it a domain controller, due to the ramifications on Active Directory. It can be a member server, but not a domain controller.

Why RRAS can't be situated on Virtual Machine? What kind on troubles may I have?
Of course AD DS installed on other VM.
