Registry Key to change Default Save location in Office 2016

Question

Thursday, February 6, 2020 2:30 PM

Hey Community,

I'm going crazy. There are hundreds of Group-Policy-Settings to control Office 2016 but it seems there's nothing to control the default save location in Office 2016. I spent hours of searching and tried several things in registry, but nothing worked...

Can someone tell me, how I can control this setting?

I'd like to configure this setting to point to the users Homedrive.

Cheers
Miranda

Hi Miranda,

Which version of Office 2016 are you using now?

On my test environment (Windows 10+Office ProPlus 2016), I add the following registries and the default local file location in Excel, Word and PowerPoint have been changed.

Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

Please refer to this article about how to back up and restore the registry in Windows: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/322756

1. Disable OneDrive as the default save location:

Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\General
Value Name: PreferCloudSaveLocations
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: <0>

2. Set default save location for Excel:

Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel\Options
Value Name: DefaultPath
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: <Path>

3. Set default save location for Word:

Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Options
Value Name: DOC-PATH
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: <Path>

4. When there is no "RecentFolderList" key under the below path, you may add it first,

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerPoint

then set default save location for PowerPoint:

Name: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerPoint\RecentFolderList
Value Name: Default
Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ
Data: <Path>

If you have any updates, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards,

Emily

Thank you Emily Hua! Do you have the Default-Path for other Applications like Access 2016 and oneNote 2016?
