Colors disappeared in windows10

Question

Monday, November 13, 2017 1:13 AM | 3 votes

My monitor shows only gray tones. Suddenly all color has disappeared. This applies to all applications. Further everything goes on normally.
When I restart, colors will be displayed. e.g. the startup screen background image is fine in color. Once I have entered my login password and I'm in my personal environment, all color disappears.
I have already searched for "personal settings" but I can not see colors. Also, display settings do not take me any further.
Any advice is welcome.

UPDATE: I found the issue. Somehow, Windows turned on the greyscale color filter automatically. You can find this located in Settings --> Personalization --> Colors -->High Contrast Settings

Search High Contrast Settings in the Settings search bar and you'll find it there.

Let me know if this helped!

OLD: I get this same issue. I created a guest account to make sure my dual monitor setup wasn't faulty, but the guest account shows colors no problem. This is not a driver issue.

Update graphics adapter driver and system to the latest version.

Create a new account for test, maybe you current user profile has broken.

Final method, reset system or use clean iso to in0place upgrade.

Regards

I had the same problem, I was typing a text and it seems that when a word was underlined by the orthography corrector all colors just suddenly disappeared.

I created a new account for test and colors work fine for the new user but the new user had some extra problems, clicking on File Explorer icon on task bar will not open it and pointing to it shows a windows thumbnail with a title "Microsoft account (Not responding)", but this window itself doesn't show up.

I decided to try a different approach instead of getting even more problems.

Hanspa, did you get any solution or you are still using the system without colors ? I am trying to avoid the reset or reinstall everything solution like we used to do at "Windows 3.1 Age".

Thank you so much! I had my hands pressed against my keyboard while not paying attention and somehow turned this on. I was so lost, thank you again.

THANK YOU Luminary2122!!  :)  I also somehow turned on the color filter.  Your solution worked perfectly.  I would have spent many hours trying to figure this out.  I greatly appreciate that you posted the solution.

It is, Ease of Access, Color Filters on/off. Happens to me repeatedly, there is a 3-key sequence for the toggle, which my talented fingers somehow find (at random)! Settings/Ease of Access/Colors & High Contrast/Apply Color Filter on/off.

Control/Windows/C is the toggle.  Nasty surprise but thank you forum for helping me out.

Thank you Luminary2122, JonFoxJones and oakman_1.  Control/Windows/C is the quickest and easiest, although it is good to know the way to get to them as pointed out.

Obviously (now that the toggle has been pointed out), it's very easy to do my mistake when simply trying to copy something (Control/C), but impossible to know that that the additional Windows key was the key added in by mistake (until now!).  I spent 10 minutes messing around and working in B&W before finding this answer posted.  I guess that would have been one obvious solution to give in the beginning by the moderator right upfront (as a first option before all the laborious ones) - but glad I kept reading!

Thanks so much.  That worked.  I was mystified by a sudden loss of all color.  I guess a recent "helpful" windows update turned on this obscure accessibility option.

Go to  Settings --> Personalization --> Colors -->High Contrast Settings and turn off greyscale.  I believe a recent windows update may have altered this setting.

This worked perfect and you were spot on.

What happened is I had set a new background picture and boom colors gone.

The grayscale only applied to my one Windows profile once I completed login.

Thanks!

Thank you Luminary. I had the same problem today and I already spent some time trying to get back to a restore point, but that did not work because I could not shut down my Antivirus. Aargh. Your solution worked instantly and saved me hours of going round in circles.
