Correct Password not accepted after waking from sleep

Question

I've found a few other reports of this around the place, but never any resolution, eg:

I support a Government organisation, and we're experiencing the same issue sporadically, especially it seems with our laptop and mobile users.  The PC will go to sleep, and when woken the correct password is not accepted.  This issue has been affecting some of our VIP users, and a problem raised.

The info I've found online suggests that it's a known issue that's not been resolved - is there anywhere that MS acknowledges this that I can refer to?

Most of the posts I've found online end up just suggesting turning off requiring a password to resume from sleep - that's not an option for us at all.

It's a hard one because it's so random and we're not always told when the problem occurs - I'm going to suggest that users select Switch User, and re-log in if it happens as a workaround, but something official I could refer to would be very useful!

Hi, have you tried setting your power settings on the network card?  It sounds like the NIC is getting shut down by sleep mode and not passing the correct information.  There could also be something in the BIOS that is shutting down the NIC.

I'd give it a try with both a laptop and a normal PC.  Just set the timeout to way low, and see if you can't duplicate the issue.

Thanks Steve, I'll give it a shot to see if I can replicate at least.

Should mention though that all of our devices cache the domain credentials for offline login, so if the device is offline it should still be able to verify the creds.

I've had one user report just recently after I posted above, that if they deliberately enter incorrect creds, get a password failed error, and then enter correct creds, they can get it.  Another avenue to go down I guess!  Would be a million times easier if I could replicate it here.

Hi thatsnotme,

1. Have you tried to use on screen keyboard to type the password?

2. which account dose not work, Domain account or local account ? If it is the domain account, it should be NIC problem.

3. Besides, I have found the similar case, we can try this:

"When the computer wakes up from power save it wants a Password or PIN but the correct one is not accepted. If you use START:POWER you see that the computer asks for "update and shutdown" or "update and restart". I pick "update and shutdown" and then boot the computer; it now accepts the normal password or PIN to logon as usual.
There is something strange when these silent installs happen in Windows 10 and the computer needs restarting because nothing tells you this after waking up from power save and your computer Password or PIN will not be accepted."

Hope can help you.

Also, did you check the time on the computers you could not login to?  Just make sure you are using a sanitary source for domain time.  If it is more than 5 minutes off, by default, it will not authenticate you regardless.  Even if your GPO is set to cached domain credentials for login.
