Image Backup Failed code 0x8078015B

Question

Wednesday, August 15, 2018 7:14 PM

I have been trying to create an image backup of my Windows 10 Professional system. I am using a USB drive for this.

It fails with the following:

Windows Backup encountered an error when accessing the remote shared folder. Please retry the operation after making sure that the remote shared folder is available and accessible. (0x8078015B)

Additional Information:

The semaphore timeout period has expired. (0x80070079).

The event log show an error with the above information less the Additional Information.

I have tried several USB hard drives (WD and Seagate) and cables that attach the hard drives. I moved the drives to a Windows 7 machine where the image is created successfully. After deleting the Win 7 image to make room (nothing in recycle bin either), the backup fails on the Win 10 machine. The hard drive in the Win 10 machine is 1 TB. The USB drive has 1.8 TB free, so space is not a problem.

It also seems that there are problems accessing the USB drive after the failure, but I have not documented those.

I have run chkdsk on the USB drives and that comes up clean as well. Are there any known problems like this?

Hi,

Based on your description, I suggest you:

1、You must have twice the free space on the target you are saving your backup.

Please use a USB drive larger than 2TB to have a try.

2、Check the Read and Write permissions on the USB drive

3、Use SFC to fix some corrupt system files which may cause your issue.

   SFC /SCANNOW

4、Make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy service in Services snap-in (run services.msc command to get this) is running and set to Automatic.

5、Try to remove existing entries of USB drive from Device Manager (run devmgmt.msc command to open this) > Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

Hope these could be helpful.
