Trying to upgrade windows 2008 R2 to windows 2016.
Here is the steps followed:
- Restored a windpws 2008 R2 VM from backup.
- Disconnect network as it will cause IP conflict.
- Mounted 2012 ISO and selected upgrade.
- Upgrade successful.
- Now upgrading from 2012 R2 to 2016.
- It gives compatibility report.
- If I boot to 2012R2 and run setup I get error error after 18% that the " Windows server 2016 installation has failed ".
Added extra disk as well thinking the disk space may be less. ( I have 49GB free in C drive )
Please let me know which logs to check and how to proceed further.

First I'd check the hardware meets the requirements and is supported. Also note the in-place upgrades are risky and never recommended. Better to clean install the OS, patch it fully, then migrate roles or application over.

Hi,
Please note that Windows Server 2012 R2 evaluation version is not supported to be upgraded to WS 2016. Also, please make sure that current WS 2012 R2 has been already licensed.
If problem persists, please provide detail information:
- Current WS 2012 R2 detail OS name and version – run “Winver” to check detail information.
- Log file such as setupact.log.
Log files that are created when you upgrade to a new version of Windows – it is also can be considered as a reference for Windows Server system:
