Side-by-Side error right after installation

Question

Saturday, August 13, 2016 6:46 PM | 2 votes

After installing Visual Studio 2015 Community im getting an error message window saying:

"C:\Visual studio\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

so I ran  Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events  to find this message:

"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Visual Studio\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe". Dependent Assembly coloader80.dll,processorArchitecture="X86",type="win32",version="1.0.0.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis."

I also ran sxstrace.exe and a console window appeared and disappeared so im not exactly sure what that executable file does or did

Also, I believe it is worth noting that right after installing Visual Studio 2015 Community, there was a message saying that VS has been installed but some error message said something that involved Microsoft Office, but I went ahead and restarted my computer anyway. So going back again to Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs

there was an event under the name column "Microsoft Office Alerts" and Type column "Administrative" and found this message:

Microsoft Outlook
Outlook couldn't start last time. Safe mode could help you troubleshoot the problem, but some features might not be available in this mode. Do you want to start in safe mode?

I don't believe there is a correlation between these two but I thought it was worth mentioning

Hi TheDuriantFruit,

Welcome to the MSDN forum.

According to the error message, I found a blog: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/smondal/2010/12/31/the-application-has-failed-to-start-because-its-side-by-side-configuration-is-incorrect-please-see-the-application-event-log-for-more-detail/ and you can use the SxSTracing to diagnose side-by-side error and find the detail error message that caused this issue.

The error message “side-by-side configuration is incorrect” often means corruption of the existing Visual C++ redistributable package or missing the correct C++ runtime components for your type of system. Please have a look at this similar issue here:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-pictures/error-the-application-has-failed-to-start-because/df019c0d-746e-42d0-ad68-465e18e3f3ef?page=1

Please have a try with the following:

1. Repair VS community 2015: go to Control Panel—Programs and Features and right-click VS community 2015, select Change-Repair.

2. Repair or reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable package

Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015:https://www.microsoft.com/en-sg/download/details.aspx?id=48145

About the Outlook and VS community 2015, they can work side-by-side with each other, since I have both of them installed on my local and all works fine.

If this issue still persists, I need your help to the installation log. Please use http://aka.ms/vscollect to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

Best regards,

Sara

Thank you for the reply Sara,

I ended up uninstalling VS2015 and downloaded the 2012 version instead and everything works fine now. I'm still not exactly sure what why I had issues with VS2015, It may have been the fact that I changed the downloaded files directory outside of the default "Program Files (x86)". Reason why I did this was because I have FreeBASIC and for some reason I had to change the directory of FreeBASIC outside of "Program Files (x86)" to work so I figured I'd do the same with VS, but when I downloaded VS2012 I left it inside the "Program Files (x86)" and it works so i don't know if thats the reason why, but everything is good so far. Hopefully, my reply can potentially help others in the future if they had the same problem as me

Have a nice day!
