Restoring Network Connections

Question

Tuesday, May 7, 2019 2:41 PM

I have a user that sometimes leaves her work open overnight and just locks her computer. When she comes in the next morning and will have the following error:

"An error occurred while reconnecting to  H:\server\share Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been resotored"

I have did a ton of research online and have tried several different things and nothing seems to resolve the issue. The user is working on a new Windows 10 64 bit operating system. I have some other clients that just recently reported the same issue on Windows 10. Is this a known issue? Does anyone know how to resolve this?

How is this mapped drive connected? Is it mapped by a group policy, a mapped drive configured from the local PC, or from a logon script?

Here are some articles which may shed some light on the issue you are having. Maybe you have already seen these since you said you have done some research.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/lost-connectivity-to-mapped-drive-after-windows-10/c82fd22d-a179-48ec-95b6-19abf3267ca1

If these do not help, let us know by which method you map the drives. It might help figure out what is going on? Are there any events in your event logs which might be related to the issues?

Larry,

I appreciate the reply. The drives are mapped via GPO, however, due to other issues the user was having recently i removed her from the OU and blocked all inheritance of group policies then I manually mapped the drive for her. I briefly reviewed the event logs but couldn't find anything definitive. I will review them again and reply if I find anything.

It's not like the network drive not being restored, it's connecting just fine and doesn't get "red x" icon, it's any previously opened window to a folder on a network drive is getting this popup message. And to add insult to injury, if such popup left opened (because it's often happens on the background), the next time computer wakes up from sleep, it shows another popup for the same window (already 2 modular popups), next time it wakes up, it shows one more and so on. Than, if "Restore previous folder windows at logon" is enabled, after reboot it will open a new explorer window for EACH of these popups, so if you originally had one window opened, after 10 wake ups and a reboot you'll endup with 10 windows of the same folder.
