Outlook Crashes When Opening PST

Question

Sunday, January 6, 2019 1:52 PM

Hello.  I'm using Outlook 2013 and have used PSTs successfully until a few days ago when one PST became corrupt.  I've used ScanPST and after various attempts, continued to receive error messages about it being corrupt.  I went to a third party tool (Remo) and even had Remo tech troubleshoot and diagnose the PST, which they returned it to me and reported that it was successful.  However, each time I open this particular PST, Outlook crashes.  I've renamed it, no change.  I am successful in opening other PSTs in this same client.  Even attempting to remove other PSTs (close them) and restarting Outlook and only attempting to open this particular PST, still the same result.  The PST size is 1G and was created in 2018 on the prior version of Outlook (2010).  Thoughts?

It seems that your PST file is severely corrupted that is why ScanPST.exe is also crashing. However, You can try these suggestions:
1. REINSTALLING OUTLOOK APPLICATION OR UPDATING INBOX REPAIR TOOL
Installing Outlook Application again is one quick remedy to fix Microsoft Outlook Inbox repair tool not working. Updating Inbox repair tool is also worth as per the Outlook version installed.

2. CREATE NEW OUTLOOK PROFILE
Creating New PST File then copy the data of old pst into new pst allows viewing the content of PST file again. It only works when you are able to open corrupt PST file.

If these solution doesn't work then reply on the same thread.

Hi,

In this situation, please have a look at the Event Viewer when the crash occurs and see if even logs can be found there.

If KERNELBASE.dll is included in the log, please check the suggestion of Abhishek to create a new Outlook profile and see if it works.
For more details, you may refer to the following link:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3002649/outlook-2013-crashes-in-kernelbase-dll-due-to-corrupt-data-file

If the above doesn’t work, please try testing on another machine to see if the PST file can be opened properly.

Any update, feel free to post back.

Aidan Wang

As Abhishek Sachdeva said seems like your PST file is severely corrupted, try the methods suggested by others, In case if none of the suggested methods works then you have to repair your PST file using any PST Repair software like Stellar Repair for Outlook.

With the demo version of this software you can preview the mailbox items of repaired PST file along with the deleted items which the software highlights in Red.

Yes, you can try some third party tool in case of PST recovery.
