Remote desktop is very slow after update

Question

Sunday, July 15, 2018 4:27 PM

After my Windows 10 desktop just update to latest version 1803 (OS Build 17134.165), the remote desktop become very slow.  Whenever windows is refresh, it will take about 10-30 seconds to refresh.  The keystroke seem ok, I can see the characters show after 0.5 second delay.  The major thing is when I toggle applications, it will take at least 20 seconds to refresh.  At first, I thought it was the company network, but after I confirm with my co-workers, they don't have any issue with their Windows 7 machine.

My company IT support team doesn't support home computer.

Since I can't roll back the update (it passed the deadline), how can I fix this issue?  I can't work like this.  It's so frustrated.

Thanks,

Steve Hoang

Finally, I was able to fix this issue.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services\Client.

Create a DWORD named fClientDisableUDP and assign it a value of 1

After I added the key & reboot the computer, my remote session is working normally.  After months of frustrate!!!

Our company desktops is Windows 10 Enterprise, we didn't make any update lately.

I updated my video driver with latest from NDvidia

I followed this thread: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/20e612b4-aa8d-4b90-830e-98e7987963d1/remote-desktop-sessions-between-windows-10-machines-too-slow?forum=win10itprohardware

The registry entries didn't exist before, I added them to my local computer.

it improved a little bit, but the issue is still there.

Hi Steve,

What's your configuration in Remote Desktop Connection\Exprience\Performance?

Try to change with "Detect connection quality automatically" or "Low speed broadband" to check again.

We also could try the following steps to configure the memory and network balance and check.

1. Logon to the Remote Desktop Services Session Host computer as an administrator

  1. Start--Run gpedit.msc

  2. In the left pane, under Computer Configuration, navigate to following:

Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment

  1. In the right pane, double-click on Configure compression for RemoteFX data

  2. Select Enabled, and choose Balances memory and network bandwidth

  3. Click OK to save the change

Bests,

Thanks for your information.

After I changed to "Low speed broadband" and the gpedit.msc; I can see some improvement from 25-30 seconds to 15-20 seconds.  It's still lagging compare with before update.

I'm not quite sure should I continue to fix this problem or live with it.  It's a pain to work like this!!!

I have another machine which connected directly to the company network, and it's very fast.  Somehow, it happens only with home connection.  My cable internet speed is 60mbs, so I don't think it's the issue.

This update is the worst update I ever encounter with Windows.  I have to reboot my computer every couple days, the internet connection is drop sporadic; I was able to use my Windows for months without reboot.  I thought it was my modem or router, but finally pinpoint to the computer.

I wasted so much time to fix problems in my computer with this update.
