Virtual disk service restarting several times per minute on Hyper-V Server 2012 R2

Question

Hello,

Windows system log is flooded with informative messages about the virtual disk service. I have a Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 host(core version) which hosts a Linux CentOS 7 VM. The latest LIS(4.2.3-1) is already installed on CentOS, though the Hyper-V Manager doesn't fully recognize it - heartbeat: OK(no application data), IS: update required. But this is a different issue.

Service started -> The Virtual Disk service entered the running state -> Service stopped -> The Virtual Disk service entered the stopped state

The service doesn't seem to crash or cause any problem, but there are so many entries in the log that could miss some really important events. Is this normal behavior?

First I thought the issue could be caused by VM, but after I stop it nothing changed.

Can you please advise?

Kind regards,

Hi ,

Is this system by any chance running anything by symantec or Mcaffee?

Before the issue happened, did you do any modifications?

Hi,

The system is still in testing and doesn't have any AV software installed. I can't tell for sure but the latest change after I noticed the issue was to add windows server backup feature. I have a weekly job that fully backs up the host including the VM.

The VDS isn't crashing, it terminates normally.

Kind regards,

Hi,

Do you have any update? Besides the log being flooded with repetitive informative messages, another major concern is if this issue could affect server performance.

Kind regards,

Hi ,

It seems the issue is related with backup feature.

After researching for some time, I did not find an official link that can be used as a strong evidence for this relationship.

Also, I will continue to research in the future.

Hi,

I'll disable the backup feature for a while and see if the issue stops.

Kind regards,

Hi Candy,

I stopped even the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service (no VM online) but the issue still persists.

Kind regards,

Hi Candy,

I figured it out myself, Windows Advanced Host Controller Interface has triggered so many restarts of the VDS. My server has a built in lSI Embedded MegaRAID firmware which I'm not using (I use hardware raid instead) but was enabled. For no reason I changed the IDE mode to AHCI in BIOS, which caused the issue. Now, after I changed it back to RAID the issue has stopped.

Kind regards,
