Error when installing Visual studio shell 2013 (Isolated)

Question

Monday, November 12, 2018 12:45 AM

Hello,

I am attempting to install Microsoft Visual studio 2013 shell (Isolated) on my windows 10 machine, however during installation the installation unexpectedly closes.

I get to this part of the installation, then after about 30 seconds the installation closes.

Any recommendations or suggestions on how to get this to work?

Thanks.

Hi Russtymango,

Welcome to MSDN forum.

Have you received any error message before installation be closed? Or just suddenly closed not any prompt?

I suggest you to check all Windows updates is up-and-date, disable anti-software, clean-up %temp% folder and run exe with administrator privilege to install again.

If the issue still persists, I need your help to collect installation log. Please use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12493 to gather the installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.zip under %temp% folder. Please upload the file to https://onedrive.live.com/ and share the link here.

We will do our best to help you diagnose it as soon as we receive your reply.

Best Regards

May.

Hello May,

Thanks for your reply.

I made the according changes that you suggested, windows is up to date, no other anti-software was running (with the exception of windows defender) and a cleanup of the %temp% folder was performed.

Alas, attempting to run the installer again with administrator privileges did not succeed.

As requested here is the link to the installation logs, hopefully this helps.

Thanks for you assistance, I really do appreciate you helping me.

Hi Russtymango,

Thank you for your time.

I have trying to reproduce your issue: install VS 2013 shell from: https://my.visualstudio.com/Downloads?q=2013&pgroup= (freely join in Dev Essentials and sign in your Microsoft account) -> run it as admin. Installation is successful. My environment is Windows 10 Enterprise (1803).

Then I compared the log files, something is different. As shown the following:

>>” [1A90:55F4][2018-11-13T11:22:24]i001: Burn v3.7.2002.0**, Windows v6.2 (Build 9200: Service Pack 0)**, path: C:\Users\russell.waters\Downloads\vs_isoshell.exe, cmdline: '-burn.unelevated BurnPipe.{9CC7017F-DC25-418C-9465-22882E11293F} {43C5CBF2-DECA-4102-BC9B-E5BE54F8D512} 15484'”

  • Refer to your description, your OS is Windows 10 and the information is not match, Windows v6.2 is Windows 8 edition and Windows 10 is Windows v6.3 in my side. Your OS is originally install the Windows 10 or upgrade from the Windows 8?

If the issue still here. please collect the newest log and share me here.

Hello May,

I have confirmed that this PC is an upgrade from windows 8. Due to this computer being an office machine, a workaround is preferred, however we can just perform a clean install if it comes to it.

I installed the latest version of .NET 4.5.1 that you provided, that worked without error.

I downloaded the version of Visual Studio shell you provided and this error appeared when attempting installation.

Here is also the log files.

Thanks for your time, look forward to your response.

Hi Russtymango,

The error indicates that previous posts are correct in that compatibility mode appears to be based entirely on file names. There is a simple method for determining precisely which name Windows expects:

I met same error during trying to reproduce your issue. Please go through the following steps to fix it:

  1. Go to find the VS 2013 exe file
  2. Right-click it to select Properties and navigate to the Details tab.
  3. There should be an entry labelled "Original filename".
  4. Simply rename the file accordingly (for example “vs_isoshell.exe” in my side) and it should run successfully. as shown in the following screenshot.

Meanwhile, I find other members had met similar issue like you, if this solution doesn’t work, please check this thread: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/22949411/visual-studio-2012-install-fails-program-compatibility-mode-is-on/23114542#23114542 .

Looking forwards you reply.

Hello May,

Thankyou for your information, I was able to start up the installation process with that name change.

Unfortunately I am still getting the same issue, with the program crashing during installation.

Attached are the logs.

Hi Russtymango,

I checked the latest log and not find any error message there.

Could you share the error screenshot to me about “with the program crashing during installation.”?

Meanwhile, could you copy this installer to another available PC which has same environment for performing a same installation to test?

I suspect your installer was corrupted. Please uninstall it completely first:

  1. Open a command prompt -> Click Run on the Start menu (Start + R) -> Type cmd and press OK (Enter).
  2. Type in the full path to the setup application and pass the following command line switches: /uninstall /force: Example: D:\vs_community.exe /uninstall /force
  3. Click the Uninstall button and follow the prompts.

Then go to Download Older Visual Studio Software and click the ‘Download’ ( sign in with your Microsoft account, freely join the Dev Essential ), You can search with the keyword like ‘visual studio 2013 shell’ under Downloads tab, then find the exe file to download it. Clean-up %temp% folder and re-name the exe file, then re-run it as admin again.

Besides, I recommend you to download VS 2013 update 5 to test if it can be installed successfully.

Hello May,

I apologise for the late response. Firstly there is no error screenshot when the program crashes during installation, the installer just closes with no prompt.

I am the only windows 10 machine at my place of work (I am the guinea pig if you will), hence I do not have another machine to try this on.

I attempted to uninstall via command prompt, however I got the same issue as before, where the uninstaller application would just close unexpectedly.

I can attempt to uninstall via control panel, then the older version of VS. What is the correct action here?

Kind regards,

Russell

Hi Russtymango,

As follow the below to troubleshot it:

  1. Run Fix it tool to automatically repair issues including corrupted registry keys that block you from installing or removing programs. Then re-run uninstaller via command line again.
  2. Run SFC /scannow to check if system or files have corrupted, it can help you to find out and fix it, refer to: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ae/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system .
  3. Download VS 2013 update 3 from official link. (Visual Studio 2013 Update 3 (KB2829760) is a program that provides a cumulative series of feature additions and bug fixes for Visual Studio 2013.).

If you install VS2013 update 3 successfully or uninstall VS2013(shell) completely. You can clean-up %temp% folder then re-install VS 2013 (shell) again. any unexpectedly issue, please share log link here.

Looking forwards your reply.

Hello May,

Running the fix it tool did not accomplish anything, it couldn't uninstall the program.

Running the SFC did not detect any issues.

I performed a cleanup of the temp file.

Could you please provide the link to the VS 2013 update 3. I searched on the internet however could not find an official link.

I attempted to install VS anyway, as expected it failed. Please find attached logs.

Thanks,

Hi Russtymango,

First of all, I have shared the download links for all VS products in my second and fourth responses and you can scroll up to check.

  • “Then go to Download Older Visual Studio Software and click the ‘Download’ ( sign in with your Microsoft account, freely join the Dev Essential ), You can search with the keyword like*‘visual studio 2013 shell’** under Downloads tab, then find the exe file to download it. Clean-up %temp% folder and re-name the exe file, then re-run it as admin again.”*

Then I checked your installation log, I feel confused with two different logs because one shows your OS has updated to Win10, the other one shows you still run the installer on Win8. Would you like to tell me the truth?

Besides, according the error message, the installer file has been corrupted. I recommend you re-download a new one to install (have a look with the official link I mentioned here).

  • Don’t forget rename the file (reference my reply above)

Looking forwards your reply.

Best Regards

May

Hello May,

Thanks for clarifying for the download, I am sorry I wasn't sure if there was something specific i was supposed to be looking for.

I attempted to install the visual studio update 3 however it gave the error I had previously.

I re downloaded a fresh version of Visual studio 2013 however it crashed during setup unexpectedly like mentioned before.

I don't know what to say regarding the logs, I am using windows 10 and I have no reason to lie to you. If you do not believe me look at the screenshot below.

Also attached are logs.

Hi Russtymango,

Be patient, I will make efforts to help you until solved it, ok?

Now, please open the Computer management - Select Services -  right click on Windows Installer in the list - select Properties. If you’re having the problem, the Windows Installer service is started, and the Stop button is disabled. Simply rebooting doesn’t stop the service. Here’s how you stop it.

In the Properties dialog, change Startup type to “Disabled”, click OK, and reboot your computer. This stops the service. After your computer reboots, again open Computer Management (right-click on Computer and select Manage), open Windows Installer Properties, and change the Startup type back to Manual.

I checked your log again, the error shows your installer package has corrupted.

So I recommend you to download ISO(choose “DVD” format in download web page) file for installation. after that, you to check SHA1 value of downloaded file just to me sure that download was completely done and nothing strange happened to your ISO that you downloaded. Use FCIV.exe tool and download it from official Microsoft site: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11533 . Next, re-try to run the DVD file on your PC. Then run exe to installation.

Looking forwards your reply.

Hello May,

I cannot find the isolated version of 2013 on the website, but I did find Visual Studio 2013 shell.

https://my.visualstudio.com/Downloads?q=Visual%20Studio%202013%20Shell&pgroup=

However there is no ISO version to download. Check image below.

What do you recommend, do you have another download link?

Hi Russtymango,

**Why did you choose VS 2013 shell installation file?

**

As I said before, because your response displayed that you installed VS 2013 update 3 failed. So while I checked your log, found the exe has corrupted, I recommend you to install ISO file. You should select “VS 2013 update 3” not “VS 2013 shell” or “Isloated”.
