Office 365 client fails to upgrade - Please close programs

Question

Tuesday, July 5, 2016 12:05 PM

Hey everyone, was wondering if I could get some suggestions troubleshooting an Office 365 client upgrade failure.  For the past several weeks all my Office apps tell me I need to upgrade, however when I click the Upgrade button it fails with the error:

Please close programs. We need to close some programs but weren't able to.Please restart your computer and try again.

Rebooting doesn't make a difference, and attempts to close all programs and processes from Task Manager isn't helping either.  Any ideas?  I'm running v16.0.6741.2042.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi,

Simply perform an "Online Repair" of your Office installation from Control Panel, then try the upgrade again and see if the issue persists:

Please feel free to post back with any findings.

I tried this - it worked for me as follows:

  1. Control Panel
  2. Programs and features
  3. Select Microsoft Office 365 - en-us
  4. Click change, and OK the administrator confirmation screen
  5. Select Repair
  6. Select 'Online Repair'. You can try 'Quick Repair', but it failed for me.

Wait 20 minutes or so, then you'll get a popup saying that Office has been completely reinstalled. You'll then need to login to your Windows account to activate the product and continue. All the best.

Tried this suggestion; after clicking the "Online Repair" button, I got "Something went wrong|Sorry, we ran into a problem|Go online for additional help.|Error Code: 30088-4"

I am using "Office Professional ProPlus 2016" Version 1802 (Build 9029.2167 Click-to-Run) Monthly Channel if that provides anybody with clues.
