Could not Launch Project options (Win + P) shortcut key is not working in win 10 1809 october release

Question

Hello All,

We are deploying win 10 1809 enterprise devices (managed by intune & AD GPO) in our environment and recently an user raised issue stating that he  win + P key is not working , found few blogs for root cause and fixes and tried below for troubleshooting

Win + p hotkey alone is not working , but all other shortcut keys are working fine

User can project PC when connecting to HDMI cable without any issue

Tried launcing the application directly from c:\windows\system32\displayswitch.exe , but nothing happens

searched event viewer for any logs , no speciifc error or warning logs

Restarted  the PC for any pending updates and retired win + p - still not working

Tried win + x , then opened mobility center and tried clicking on connect display - still not lauching project options

checked the driver and Intel display driver is installed

In couple of blogs , they have mentioned like replacing the displayswitch.exe app with older version fixed the issue , but that is not a proper solution for us since this issue is for all the windows 10 devices

So any idea  or is it known issue mentioned by microsoft and released any fix for this ??

Request your suggestions to fix this issue

Thanks ,

Kalaivani

Thanks for your response,

Its clean ISO image and I found what is the cause of the issue , One of the Intune device restriction policy (turn off device discovery ) was affecting the win + P but couldnt find reason why blocking device discovery is affecting win + p project options

There is not much detailed info on intune device discovery policy  other than one liner

Block a device from being discovered by other devices

Hello Kalaivani,

On my 1809 machine, both of win + p and displayswitch.exe are working fine.

Since you mentioned that  c:\windows\system32\displayswitch.exe doesn’t work, I think your system image should have something wrong, try to update system to the latest build.

Note: disable your security software and Anti-Virus.

Repair system files with sfc /scannow and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth commands.

Besides, before your deploy Windows 10 1809 to clients, have you customize anything? Try to install a clean iso and check whether displayswitch.exe works normally.

Ok, a good finding. But I either don’t know why turn off device discovery was affecting the win + P, because on my machine, though turn off network discovery, Win + P still works.

What about turn on network discovery via GPO/MDM?

Hi ,

Though as per our testing  Enabling Device discovery in Intune doesn't affect the network discovery options when we checked , the network discovery is off only

What to know what change does Intune device discovery setting performs

Kalai
