This item does not support previewing...

I recently downloaded visual studio professional 2015 with Xamarin.

Every time I make a new solution and click the "References" in the "Solution Explorer" tab,
I get a message at the bottom "this item does not support previewing."

what are the possible reasons I get this message and how can I fix it?

Did you mean you got the error message when you double click the References? If possible, please share us a screenshot.

I did a test in my side using VS2015 Update2. And it works well in my side. When I created a Blank App(Portable). And it works well when I click the References.

Please also try to create another project, like Console Application. Please check whether it has the same problem.

By the way, please install the VS2015 Update2. The latest update of Visual Studio 2015 then try it agian.
