Office 2016 updates won't install

Question

Thursday, February 22, 2018 10:17 PM

On suggestion of a certain Erica Aro from the Microsoft Community website I am posting my question here also. To save time, I'm copying my original question and Erica's answer.

My original question:

"I am currently using Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit and Office 2016 64-bit.

However only certain parts of the Office Suite are installed in my system, specifically: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, My Office.

I have no use for any others, so I decided not to install them to save HDD space, reduce security risks and reduce the burden on the system.

I also have no use for any of the 365 features.

Recently I have been getting prompts to install updates for Office from Windows Update, but every time I try to install them, every single one of them comes back as Error 0x80070643.

I have tried to install them quite a few times already.

Here are the problematic updates:

KB4011686

KB4011682

KB4011684

KB4011664

KB4011668

KB4011685

KB4011663

KB4011681

They are in the order they appear in the Windows Update window.

I have also downloaded standalone installers from the Microsoft website and tried to install them myself, but I again get the same error message.

So as not to create conflicts, I have also disabled Windows Defender because I am using third party security software (antivirus: BitDefender, Firewall: GlassWire, with the occasional Malwarebytes and Spybot).

I have tried to install the updates after I have disabled the third party security software, but again the same error message.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks."

Erica's answer:

"Hi VladimirGolubovic,

Erika Aro has replied to your question Office 2016 Updates won't install in Microsoft Community.

Hi Vladimir,

The error 0x80070643 can be a third-party conflict. We recommend disabling all your antivirus programs. If the issue persists, we recommend posting this to our TechNet Forums for a more comprehensive help regarding multiple failed updates. Feel free to update us anytime on the progress of your case."

A few things, since Erica didn't understand my explanation.

I have tried installing the updates both through Windows Update as well as manually with the standalone installers with no luck even before I posted in the community, as noted in the bold text above.

I have since completely uninstalled ALL third party security software and reverted all security changes, and then tried the install process again both automated and standalone, again no luck.

I even tried the entire process with Windows Defender turned off, and again, nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Hi Vladimir,

Please try to follow the following steps to determine the status of the OfficeSource Engine service:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
  3. View the Startup type list.
  4. If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then click OK.

If issue persists after the steps above, then try to repair Office via Control Panel, and see if this will resolve this issue:

Hope this helps.

I have the same problem and the startup type is correct at manual. There is not any repair option on my system. I followed the steps in the link above.
