Hyper-V Network Connections for Windows XP

Question

Tuesday, March 18, 2008 2:01 PM

Can someone please advise me on how to get a network connection to show up in a Windows XP VM hosted in Hyper-V.  I am seeing the unrecognized hardware in the device manager but do not know which generic adapter to use for it since Hyper-V does not yet support the integration tools for XP guests.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

If you are running the Hyper-V Beta version (released with WS08) then you will need to alter the hardware configuration of your VM.

Remove the network adapter of the VM (the one installed by default) and add a "legacy network adapter".

This is because the Beta release of Hyper-V does not contain Integration Components that support Windows XP.  The legacy network adapter is emulated, so it will work for any operating system (when Integration components are not available).

I see that Integration support for WinXP SP3 and Vista SP1 has been included in the Release Candidate version - so it is coming.

We could probably expect to see expanded support from the integration components w/r/t additional OSes in later builds of Hyper-V.  Stay tuned.

I figured out what you meant by adding a legacy network adapter. Once I did that, the NIC (an Intel Generic lan card) shows up in the network connections but is not functional.
The system is unable to acquire an IP address from my DHCP server. I have Other VMs (server 2008)  on this same server and they acquire thier IP address just fine.

Are you sure there are no limitations set on the switch where the Hyper V server is connected? Sometimes networking personel limits the IPs that can be given out to a single LAN port.
