Question

Hi, I'm trying to validate a 3 node cluster, and am running all tests.
The Cluster Validation wizards runs normally and then gets stuck at 66% on the 'List Software Updates', the result column says 'Gathering data about node node2....'
Anyone shed some light on what's going here?
Cheers,
Stephen

Hi, I had another node in a separate cluster go down with the same issue, cluster validation gets stuck, attempting to run windows update on the node via RDP and the update window opens but is solid white. In this case I ran through this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 (by hand, steps 3, 4a, 6) and it fixed the problem after two reboots of the node.
Cheers,
Stephen.

Just an extra bit of data, this cluster is up and running and passed validation when it was built a week ago.
I'm trying to re-run the cluster validation as SCVMM has flag the cluster as no validation run.
The cluster nodes are all Windows 2012
After cancelling the validation and rebooting the cluster, the 'Windows Update' service on Node2 takes a very long time to shut down.
Cheers,
Stephen.

Hi,
Is this windows 2008r1 sp1 ?
A hotfix is available that addresses the Win2008 R2 service pack 1 issue with Validate on a 3+ node cluster. This is KB 2531907. You can find more information and the hotfix to download at the following link:

Hi, I added some more data to the post above as I realised the first was somewhat lacking in data!
The servers are 2012 Standard, all updates apart from this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2750149 due to this issue http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverClustering/thread/0c881098-86d0-478f-a265-63dbd10ca616

Hi,
In the cluster validate config wizard you can uncheck the validate software levels, and see if it runs. without errors.

I'm trying to re-run the cluster validation as SCVMM has flag the cluster as no validation run.
The cluster nodes are all Windows 2012
SCVMM and Windows Server 2012. Are you running SCVMM 2012 with SP1? Otherwise, SCVMM does not support Windows Server 2012. I know this doesn't address the issue you are talking about, but it could have been the reason you got the message saying the no validation had been run.
BTW, SP1 was just released today.

I'm running SCVMM 2012 SP1 UR1.
It's seems Windows update is completely shot the node in question, so I'm going to rip it out and redeploy it tomorrow.
Cheers,
Stephen

glad to hear that the problem is gone. any idea what the cause was ? some random failure in patching ?

i tried to rebuild the Cluster but without any sucess.
while the Validation tests where running i found an Event inidcating an DCOM/CAU problem
I have CAU configured but it dosn't seem to work anymore, last successfull run was 13.01.

Hi,
Have you configured CAU before you created the cluster ?
You should first build you cluster.
more info about CAU
