Microsoft Office 2016 Version Numbers

Hi All.

I am having an interesting discussion with a guy carrying out checks that our patching is up to date.

We are running a Volume license on premise install of Office 2016 Pro Plus. Completely up to date according to onsite WSUS and Microsoft updates.

He is telling me that our version is not up to date because it isn't showing version number 16.0.6769.2017

My questions are:

Does version 16.0.6769.2017 just relate to the Office 365 Update channel? Does the version of an on premise local volume license install increment as it is patched?

It's only for Office 365, the subscription version. For the MSI version of Office, as mentioned by Dave above, security updates will be released each month, and each MSP/DLL file should register itself and bump version.

This tool is great to help demystify what version of Office you have installed.  The list of all versions of Office 365 ProPlus is here https://technet.microsoft.com/EN-US/library/mt592918.aspx 

We need to confirm, are you running Office 365 ProPlus using subscription service or on-prem Office 2016 VL which you've indicated. For MSI media, I'm not sure we have a list of versions because its essentially a static product at this point, you receive security updates each month from WSUS and each MSP should register itself and bump version.

That link for the latest updates was exactly what I needed.

Was really frustrating being told my software wasn't patched when I knew it was. All sorted now.
