Setting my custom location in skype for business fails

Question

Friday, August 21, 2015 7:49 AM | 4 votes

When trying to set my location, the value is not set. If I select from list, it changes back to "Set Your Location". If I try to write something manually, the field stays editable, and the value is not set. If I the tries to select from the list, the edit field remains with the value I wrote manually.

I have this issue only when connected through VPN. It's working perfectly when not connected to VPN.

Is it happening with one client or all the client

if its happing with one client delete user Sip profile and test

if happening for all user check the Get-CsLocationPolicy

Agreed.  The reasonable expectation is that you should be able to manually type-in a Location Name and hit [Enter], and that name will now be a selection in the dropdown.  You should be able to type several names, each time hitting [Enter] and each time the location will be added to the dropdown.  Now, when you want to let people know where you are physically, you simply select one of the saved custom names from the dropdown.

Amazingly, that simple functionality isn't provided.

I'm having the exact same issue!

We are only experiencing this when the user is connected over VPN to the company network (F5 Big-IP Client).

The field can be filled in when we are connected to 'normal internet' and you would enter "Working from home", followed by starting the VPN. After the VPN connection is established, Skype tries to reconnect and the location field shows "Set Your Location". When you try to change this value your manually typed text remains in place but the fields seems to stay in "Edit mode".

We are an Office 365 customer and are using "Skype for Business Online".

The command "Get-CsLocationPolicy" is not available to us when I connect PowerShell to S4B Online.

Could someone please point me in the right direction for solving this issue? Is it VPN related, do I have to change S4B Online settings, ... ?

You are right. I also have this issue only when connected through VPN. It is working perfectly when not connected to VPN, but then I have other issues with not able to connect to exchange for updating contact details etc.

I may have this issue over VPN as well but Only 1 custom location is ever remembered whether or not I'm on a VPN.

Do you use the latest update of the Client. I don't see any issues with the Skype for Busienss from Office 2016.

Even more AMAZING, here it is June 2016 and it still is not fixed.  Such a basic, easy to fix functionality, not provided!  I am almost in shock.  Why haven't more people complained about this!???????

We are also having this issue where if we are VPN in we are unable to set the location but if we are not VPN'd in we are able to set the location.

we too are having this issue for all users only on vpn

We're trying to transition from Lotus Notes and not being able to update the locations list is just one of the problems we're having.  Even when connected through the LAN we are not able to update the list, only put in our current location.  And . . . (not to pile on) we can't get popups to work receiving an IM.  I'm working from home today but you'd never know from looking at my current location.

Is there any solution to this issue?  I am also having issues setting my location only when on F5 Edge Client VPN with Skype for business 2016.  This does not happen when connecting via any other means.  Thanks

I am seeing the same behavior in May of 2017.  When I am on the VPN I am not able to set my location.  Before I logged onto the VPN Skype automatically logged in and I was able to set my location.  As soon as I got on the VPN my location reset itself to 'Set your location'.  Selecting a location from the list does nothing.  Entering a new custom location leaves the field as editable.  Was a solution ever provided for this?

June of 2017, still not fixed.  The Location field just sits there and won't accept the input.  Very frustrating.

August 2017, still the same issue not fixed ?!?!

Running Skype for Business 2016 MSO (16.0.8229.2086)

On normal internet; no issue, I can write e.g. "Working@Home" and can choose to Share this with others. Works as it should.

On VPN; fails completely. As others replied, I can select the 'Set Your Location' field, but after I write something, the field remains white (~stays in Edit mode, cannot get it to accept my input). Also, when I press the down arrow, I just have an empty white box, and no option to 'Share your location with others'.

My colleagues CANNOT see my location... Microsoft, fix this lame bug please.

I guess i should say September 2017, still not fixed.. We are going to instruct our users to use "What's happening today" box at the top of the window instead of Location as it is working more reliably. Location box probably has some logic to guess the location on its own and it goes bonkers when VPN is in play.

P.S. i have filed a service request and i've been told it's a KNOWN issue, but it is not known when it can be fixed. They have also suggested to express my concerns on uservoice..

Just raising my hand that we have this issue too.  We're using the F5 Big-IP Edge Client for VPN.  We didn't have this issue when using Juniper for VPN, but the company decided to switch to Big-IP.  Which is too bad; I liked Juniper so much more.

Thanks to wrootw for the suggestion to use the "What's happening today?" field instead to set your location.  That works well.

This is not really explained well anywhere but from what I have gathered the "Location" is tied to the the PC where Skype for Business is running. Thus you can only assign a single location to that PC. Skype does not consider location to mean your physical location but the location of the PC. So when you VPN to a PC running Skype for Business, the location of the PC is still the same.

In addition (or because of this?), the location value is not even shown to others using Skype for Business when you connect to a PC using VPN. As wrootw suggests, you can use "What's happening today" to show "your location" instead. Hopefully Microsoft will change this feature to work as most people are assuming = identify your location, not the location of the PC.

Friday, November 10, 2017 6:05 PM

In our case we are not doing VPN to a PC with Skype. We are taking PC to some other location (Home) and doing VPN to our internal network. But we are not working from the same location at work as we use to, so we need to change the location from "Office xxx" to "Home" or whatever. Using this field to state the location of a PC would be a bizarre idea. Skype is about communication between people, it should let you inform others about you, not about your PC, etc.

Adding to my previous thoughts. When you add anything to your location field it probably ties that information with your current IP. In VPN case you have several IPs in play and it probably can't decide where to tie the information and therefore makes this field inactive.

Well it's almost Christmas 2017. My guess is Micro$oft will never fix this. It seems they want us all to switch to their new "Teams" program. Too bad that's a "modern" app. Looks ugly as hell in my opinion. Maybe it will grow on me, but I doubt it.

We have the same issue. We moved from Lync Server 2013 where location settings worked fine. We could be in the office, set a Location definition, and it would stick. next time I plugged in at my desk it would stay the same setting. Even when I worked at home it would automatically switch to my Working at Home Location setting. It also kept a history of all Location Settings that I have entered in there. As soon as I moved to Skype 2015 it no longer remembers our Location settings no matter where we are. It forgets them when you are in the office, it doesn't know when I am on VPN, and the history of Locations is gone as well. WTH.

08/08/2018 and I'm having exactly the same issue when connected via VPN.

Tuesday, December 17, 2019 11:44 PM

As of Dec 2019, still not fixed. Whether VPN or LAN or whatever, it only shows 1 location only. If I try to edit my location it just replaces it instead of adding a new one to the list. This may be an administrative policy.

Still an issue - end of March 2020

So....if you set it while online but disconnected from your VPN, what you typed in while disconnected still shows to the other users in your group after you reconnect.  At least it does for me.  You have to disconnect from the VPN to change it.  Still not fixed, but this works.
