Excel files slow to open when not connected to the network printers

Question

Hello,

We have started deploying Windows 10 with Office 2016 and have run into an issue.  If a user opens Excel files outside the office, Excel take a really long time to open.  I narrowed this down to being a printer issue, by having the user make their PDF printer the default and then the file opens instantly.  Does anyone know what Excel is trying to do in the background while its opening files?  Is there any way to disable it looking for printers on open?  Although the pdf option works, it is not a good solution as it is a manual process.

Does Windows 10 allow printing profiles (for on/off the network)?

Thanks!

Hi Spindog,

By “outside the office”, do you mean the computer is off the network?

Generally, each time a component of Office loads, it checks to see if a printer is available. When a computer accesses the printer via the network, Office applications may hang for a few seconds or stop loading completely if the network is inaccessible.

Please update the printer driver to the latest version. Also try removing the printer from “Printers and Devices” and then reinstall the network printer to see if there is any improvement.

If the issue persists, it is normally recommended to connect the printer directly to your computer.

Hope it is helpful. Please feel free to post back if you need further assistance.

Hi Yuki Sun,

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, I meant when it is off the network, Excel files are slow to open.  The drivers are up to date and the printers were just added.  We have a big office, so are unable to connect the printer directly to the computer.

Do you know of any way to tell office not to look for printers when opening files?  Is there a printing "profile" that can be setup so that if it does see the network, to make the default printer something else?

Thank you!

Hi Spindog,

>> Do you know of any way to tell office not to look for printers when opening files?

Normally,Office applications depend on printer information to run properly, such as laying out the document in Word. So I am afraid a printer is necessary when we work with Office.

As for the "printing profile", sorry but I personally don't know too much about this. For further assistance on this, I would suggest you contact your printer supplier for more professional responses.

By the way, was there any error messages when the issue occurred? If you saw the Accessing printer dialog box, please try starting the application in safe mode to see if it is helpful(for example: Press "Win + R", then type "excel  /safe", press "Enter".). It is also suggested in another similar thread to restart the Windows Print Spooler Service(Press "Win + R", then type "services.msc", press "Enter", select "Printer Spooler", click "Restart".)to see the result.

If above doesn't fix the issue, it is recommended to manually set the Windows printer as default via Control Panel.
