Roaming profiles on Windows 10 PC not updating to server

Question

Monday, June 24, 2019 2:05 PM

Hi,

my windows 10 PC is no longer updating my user profile directory on the server during logoff.  For example, when I create a new file on my local desktop and log off, that file does not appear in the profile directory on the server.  Furthermore, a restart on my PC causes a very old profile on the server to reappear on my PC, effectively resulting in lost files. This seems to be a recent occurrence.  Can someone please assist with troubleshooting steps to help me determine root cause of this issue?

Sincere thanks,

sul.

Hi,
We can try to troubleshoot it as below:

  1. Perform clean boot and logon the machine with our account, check if it can sync the file.
How to perform a clean boot in Windows

  2. Close all the firewall and check if it can sync the files.

  3. Compare with other machines if there is any computer group policy to block the files to synced.

If we did any operation, then we encounter the issue?

UPDATE: looks like there is some sort of incompatibility issue between windows roaming profiles and an application called "Cisco AnyConnect ISE Posture Module".  After uninstalling this application, windows profiles sync properly in windows.  I am able to reproduce this symptom on multiple Windows 10 computers.  If anyone else can reproduce this symptom in their environment, kindly chime in.

Thank you,

-sul.

Make sure that you are deploying Roaming Profile correctly:

Thanks for the suggestion. Roaming profiles are indeed setup correctly and has worked fine for years on this PC. This issue is a recent occurrence. My request is how do I methodologically check for the cause of this recent behavior. Thank you, -s.

Hello,
Thank you for posting in our TechNet forum.

To better understand our question, please confirm the following information:

  1. Do we configure roaming profile via the following group policy setting?
Computer Configuration->Policies->Administrative Templates->System->User Profiles->Right-click Set roaming profile path for all users logging onto this computer and then select enabled.

Or do we  set up Roaming User Profiles on user accounts?

  1. Whether other users encounter the same issue?

Meanwhile, we can troubleshoot the issue as below:

  1. Check can we access the shared user profile folder.

  2. Check if there is roaming type in Control Panel\System and Security\System\Advanced tab\User Profiles\Settings.

Daisy Zhou

Hello Daisy,

thank you so much for your post! We configure roaming profiles on user accounts and not through policy settings. here is a screenshot of the profile tab of my user settings from ADUC:

As far as I know, no other computers have this issue. The problem is only happening on my PC. Furthermore, when a different user logs on to my PC, they encounter the same issue and when they go back to their own computer, everything works as expected for them.

I can confirm that I can access the profile folder indicated above:

and the stored profile type on this computer is Roaming:

Please let me know if I can offer any additional details.  I look forward to any further suggestions.

Thank you,

-sul.

Hello Daisy,

thank you again for your post.  Other computers work normal when I sign on and off.  All profile changes are synced perfectly with the server from other computers that I sign on to.  I tested other computers by creating a new file on the desktop and when I signed of, the new file was present on the server.

Just a thought: I wonder if there is some kind of a registry setting on my computer that is blocking the profile on my computer to sync with the server?

Thank you,

-sul.

Hi Daisy, Thank you for your post. I somehow resolved the issue by uninstalling the most latest applications since the last two months. I do not know which one was causing this behavior but I plan to reinstall them one-by-one, and if the issue returns then I will know the culprit. I will mark your post as an answer because I think your method would have eventually helped pinpoint the rogue app or issue just as well. I really appreciate your help. Many thanks! -sul.
