Exchange Mailbox Databases are growing faster after Migration

Dear Concern,

I have migrated my Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2016. After migrating my Databases are growing so faster. I have allocated the new storage 3 times bigger from my old Exchange 2010 storage but my new storage almost full in the 6 months. I have checked the DB white space the white space is ok so what's the reason to fill-up the DB.

Hi,

Are all databases growing rapidly on the same disk?

Try to create a new database on another disk, then move a part of user mailboxes to the new database. If the new database grows rapidly as well, you need to create new mailboxes for the users, then monitor the new database for some days.

Since these users are migrated from Exchange 2010, and the EDB files are growing fast, it is likely to be related to old mailboxes. This is why we suggest to monitor the user mailbox size. If you have checked user mailboxes, and no mailbox is growing abnormally, you can reply back to narrow down the possibility.

Hi

Is the DB growing or the logs not purging with backups?

check the IIS logs if you dont have a corrupt active sync device if it is logs that will make them grow.

What version of Exchange 2016 you running?

Thanks for replying. My Windows and Exchange server installation partition are separately also Exchange EDB and EDB Log file Partitions are different location so I am not worried about the IIS and EDB Log files. Main concern is EDB files are growing faster.

Hi Babu,

Did you enable journaling or use third-party email message archival systems?

Do you create archive mailboxes on the same database? It's recommend to create archive mailboxes on other databases.

The rapid growth of the database size may be related with the large growth of some mailboxes' size. You can monitor the user mailboxes' size for some time. This command may help you check the mailbox size:

Get-Mailbox -ResultSize Unlimited | select DisplayName,PrimarySmtpAddress,@{label="TotalItemSize";expression={(Get-MailboxStatistics $_.Name).TotalItemSize}},UseDatabaseQuotaDefaults,IssueWarningQuota,ProhibitSendQuota,ProhibitSendReceiveQuota| Sort-Object DisplayName | export-csv C:\mailboxsize.csv -NoTypeInformation

Microsoft Exchange Server User Monitor tool also may help you collect user mailboxes information.

Hi Babu,

How many mailboxes on this database?

What's the database size? How much space the database is used?

You can monitor the growth of mailboxes on this database for several days. Hope the command and tool provided above can help you find out any abnormal mailboxes.

My all Mailbox Databases are growing, not specific one. Basically My Database partition is all most full.
