When attempting to install Update 1 on VS 2012 Ultimate, get numerous errors that never seem to clear up, even after running repair several times.
The following items are from the logs indicating issues with certificate chain validation. I've run capi logging and see no errors related to building the chain.
Logs collected and here: http://sdrv.ms/XTfd6E
Screen shots of the VS installer here: http://sdrv.ms/XTfs1E
This happens on multiple machines (all that we've tried) in our environment. We've tried from outside our corporate firewall as well.

Hi Shawn Cicoria,
Thanks for your post.
Please see your following error from the earlier log:
[14E8:1150][2012-12-12T08:35:04]: Error 0x80070002: Failed to layout bundle from: 'C:\Users\SHAWNC~1\AppData\Local\Temp\2be8bdec-86fe-4d4e-9b7d-cbb4ced8e633}\2be8bdec-86fe-4d4e-9b7d-cbb4ced8e633}' to 'C:\Users\Shawn Cicoria\Documents\Visual Studio 2012 Update 1 (KB2707250)\vsupdate_KB2707250.exe'
Then a new log first comes into this error: Automatic updates could not be paused due to error: 0x80240025
Then you met the error u found: 0x80070490
The first error 0x80070002 means file not found. How did you install this update? Directly use that web-installer? Or tried the layout file already ?
I suspect this is first a corrupt package error. Can you try a different way to install this update?
Then please try Daniel's solution and this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958044?wa=wsignin1.0
If the error persists, please gather another log for me.

Barry Wang

Upon running "repair" now get the following error messages (of which, only the 1st I care about now). This happens every time repair is run. Logs still indicate an issue with cert chain on preparation.exe
"Microsoft Visual Studio Preparation" "Element not found."
"Microsoft Web Deploy 3.0" Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel.

Sorry that you are having problems with Visual Studio. From a support perspective this is really beyond what we can do here in the forums. I would encourage you to open a support case to resolve this problem. Support cases for installation problems are free. You can use this link to open a case: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;en-us;offerprophone . Be sure to select "Installation or Setup Issue with Visual Studio...." for the Support topic. Select "Visual Studio installation" for the sub-topic. That should make the case no charge.

Any ideas what I could do?
Thanks,

FWIW, I too am getting the dreaded Visual Studio Install Error, Microsoft Web Deploy 3.0, Element Not Found, during a Change/Repair operation, where I was doing a Change, adding components to the installation.
Ug. This is not good. Also kind of odd given the maturity of the product. Weird that this kind of stuff isn't a thing of the past. I guess the "DLL Hell is gone" kind of promises that seem to be suggested a long time ago are still not true, where now we have "GAC Hell" in addition to "DLL Hell" it seems. Anyway, this is just too bad, I suppose, and though I am not stopped in my tracks by it, it is a non-good sign of product issues. The sad part is that I do certainly REALLY like Visual Studio. I suppose I have to press management all the more to upgrade to Visual Studio 2013 (and get rid of Visual Studio 2012) and so on.
In the meanwhile, if you have a solution for this, then please post it here.
Thanks.
