Trying to run Windows Update on Windows Server 2008 R2 on an installation that has been in use since 2010. Recently started getting error code 80072F78 when Windows Update is searching for updates. Also unable to install SP1, I believe due to the same error code. Any ideas/suggestions?

Hi,
80072F78 means that the server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.
Normally, this issue is caused by misconfigured firewall or proxy. If you are using any firewall or proxy, please try to connect the server to internet directly.
If it doesn't work, please try to run the System Update Readiness Tool to check if there is any system file corrupt.
